After finally getting the dispatcher to hang up, Carter roared at her, "Are you insane?"

She shot back, "Since your sister was so absolutely certain, shouldn't I have called the cops?"

Seeing that she was perfectly willing to blow the entire situation out of proportion, he scrambled to defend his sister. "She was just talking nonsense! Why would you take it so seriously?"

"You're the one who took it seriously!" she mocked bitterly. "So it's fine for her to just talk nonsense? To throw filthy accusations around without a shred of proof? To casually destroy someone's reputation? If I pressed charges for defamation, she'd be facing jail time!"

Backed into a corner, Carter yelled at his sister, "Jeannie, apologize to her right now!"

"Why should I apologize to her?!" she stomped her foot in fury.

Jocelyn calmly tapped her phone screen, playing back a crystal-clear audio recording of Jeannie declaring she was positive Jocelyn had slept with the investors.

"If you don't want to apologize, that's fine. See you in court."

Jeannie's face burned scarlet. Glaring with absolute hatred, she finally lowered her head and muttered, "I'm sorry. I... I made it up. I don't actually know anything!"

"If I hear even a whisper of these rumors outside this building, we will be handling this legally," Jocelyn warned. She glanced at Carter one last time. "If there's nothing else, I'm leaving. And please don't call me in here for this kind of petty garbage ever again. I don't work for you anymore!"

As she walked out, Jeannie stamped her feet in a rage, while Carter rubbed his throbbing temples.

That evening, when he went to the hospital to finalize Yolande's discharge papers, she noticed his grim expression. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

"It's nothing. Just some company headaches," he brushed it off.

"I originally wanted to introduce you to Edgar Barrett to secure funding for you, but I completely ruined it," she said softly.
