Jocelyn closed the distance in a split second. "Are you hurt?"
He raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "I would have thought you'd be more concerned about the weaklings bleeding out on the floor."
"I'm not exactly a saint," she replied. Since he was still able to casually banter with her, he clearly wasn't severely injured. "It's not safe here. We need to leave, now!"
She grabbed his wrist, intending to pull him toward the emergency stairwell.
But just as they neared the exit, she heard it.
*Tick. Tick.*
She hadn't heard it when she first arrived because the sounds of the brawl had masked it.
Now that the fighting had stopped, the rhythmic ticking was terrifyingly clear.
The bomb!
Her blood ran ice cold. Just as the ticking morphed into a shrill, crackling static, pure instinct took over. She spun around and tackled him to the hard floor.
"Get down!"
But the explosion never came.
A moment later, the man pinned beneath her spoke, his voice infuriatingly calm.
"There isn't going to be the explosion you're waiting for."
"What?" She froze, looking down directly into his deep, abyss-like eyes.
"The wiring was altered. Even though the timer ran out, it's not going to detonate," he explained.
"You knew about the bomb?" she asked in shock.
