"What's wrong? Is something on your mind?" Yolande's voice pulled Carter out of his thoughts.
He looked at the woman sitting across from him. She had once been his teenage pipe dream. She was the wealthy daughter of the Sinclair family, and he was just a broke kid with nothing to his name.
He had never even dared to imagine that one day, they could be friends and sit across from each other at a dinner like this.
"It's nothing. Just a minor issue," he downplayed it.
Yolande smiled. "By the way, I went to look at that villa you mentioned last time. I really love it. The realtor said if we pay in cash upfront, the seller will knock five million off the price."
Carter's face immediately tightened.
He had originally planned to buy that property as a gift for her. If the company were running smoothly, pulling out a few million for a house would be easy. Right now, however, he simply didn't have the liquidity.
"Let's hold off on the villa for now. Maybe we can find a better one later," he suggested.
Yolande frowned, lifting her chin with a touch of pride. "If you didn't want to buy it for me, you could have just said so. It's not like I forced you to."
"No, that's not it!" Carter rushed to reassure her. "Compared to you saving my life back then, a house is nothing. It's just... the company's cash flow is really tight right now, so... getting that kind of cash upfront is a little difficult."
He really hadn't wanted her to see him struggling financially.
Yolande's eyes flickered. "When I saved you, I never expected anything in return. If you're having money problems, we can forget about the house for now. It's just a shame that my uncle's side of the family controls the main Sinclair estate. My family is from the second branch, so we don't have much real power, otherwise I could help you with your cash flow."
