Dominic was the first one through the door.
Seeing his grandmother lying there with her eyes tightly shut, his eyes widened in shock. "What happened?"
Before Seraphina could even open her mouth, Winifred barged into the room.
She froze for a second when she saw the scene.
"What happened to the old madam? Seraphina, what did you do?"
Seraphina released the old woman's hand and stood up.
"I suspect Grandma has been poisoned. I've already called Dr. Lawrence, and he should be here any minute."
"Poisoned?" Winifred's voice shrieked an octave higher as she glared daggers at Seraphina. "She was perfectly fine! How could she be poisoned?"
She was right. She had been perfectly fine, so how could she be poisoned?
Seraphina shot her an intense, searching look.
She wasn't sure if she was imagining it, but Winifred seemed to flinch, her gaze darting away, unable to meet Seraphina's eyes.
A fleeting shadow crossed Winifred's face—so fast it was almost imperceptible—but Seraphina caught it.
Seraphina's heart plummeted.
Dominic leaned over the bed, checking his grandmother's pulse, his brow locked in a tight frown.
"Dr. Lawrence is here," a maid announced from the doorway.
Dr. Lawrence rushed in carrying his medical kit and immediately began examining the old woman.
He checked her pupils, her pulse, and her blood pressure.
A few minutes later, he straightened up, his expression grave.
"It is poison. The dose was small, so it's not fatal. Coupled with the fact that the old madam ingested a suppressant, she isn't in any immediate danger."
He opened his kit and pulled out a syringe. "I'll administer an antidote now and keep her under observation."
As the liquid was pushed into her veins, the old woman's breathing gradually grew steadier.
