"Seraphina! What happened?" Chelsea rushed over, grabbing her arm. Seeing her pale face and the sweat on her forehead, her voice immediately changed. "Who did this? Was it Dominic? Did he bully you again?"
Seraphina shook her head and straightened up.
"I'm fine."
Chelsea didn't believe her, but seeing the look in Seraphina's eyes, she didn't press further.
She helped her back to the booth and poured her a glass of water.
Seraphina ignored it. She bypassed it, picked up the glass of liquor on the table, tipped her head back, and took a huge gulp.
The strong alcohol burned down her throat, stinging her eyes, but she didn't stop, pouring herself another glass.
Chelsea supported her.
"A man like that isn't worth it. He's blind and heartless. He's not worth your tears."
Holding her glass, Seraphina stared at the amber liquid inside. "I'm not crying over him."
She set the glass down, looking up at the shadowed corner of the room.
She was telling the truth.
She wasn't upset that Dominic had defended Cynthia. That pain had been worn dull, time and time again, over the past six years. Stabbing at it now didn't even hurt anymore.
What really broke her heart was something else.
It was the fact that she had stood in that hallway, having her wrist crushed, shoved to the ground, her evidence deleted, forced to apologize, and she couldn't fight back.
He used Zachary's project to threaten her, and she could only bow her head and swallow it.
Because she was too weak, so weak she couldn't even protect the people she cared about.
That suffocating helplessness choked her far worse than any betrayal.
Seraphina gripped her glass tightly.
She had to become stronger.
Strong enough that no one could ever use the people around her as leverage again.
Strong enough that she would never have to lower her head and say sorry again.
She downed the last drop of liquor, slammed the glass down, and stood up.
