“Go ahead” I croaked.

Connor leaned in just enough that the night air between us disappeared. His voice dropped to a low murmur, warm against the shell of my ear.
“I’ll be waiting for you.”
Then he stepped back, turned, and walked away without another word. The terrace door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone with the cold and the ridiculous way my pulse was still trying to climb out of my throat.
It took several long seconds before I trusted my legs enough to move.
I followed the same path he had taken, down the quieter corridor that led toward his room as I held my purse close. The tonic bottle inside it knocked softly against the tube of cream. By the time I reached his door my hands were slightly damp.
I hesitated, then pushed it open.
Connor stood near the small side table, pouring something amber into a short glass. The soft click of the bottle against the crystal was the only sound in the room. He didn’t turn around immediately despite sensing
I closed the door behind me with more care than necessary and stayed near it, suddenly unsure what to do with my arms or the fact that I had just asked this man to try to seduce me for science.
“You’re drinking?” I asked because the silence was getting too loud.
He swirled the glass once, took a slow sip, and finally glanced over his shoulder. “Yes. Want one?”
“No.”
I was still standing there like an idiot. Connor set the glass down, turned fully, and nodded toward the bed.
“Get on the bed.”
It was not like I hadn’t shared his bed before or not slept with him. But my wolf had put me in a weird spot.
“Don’t order me” I glared at him and he set the glass down, turned around and simply raised his foot.
I scrambled to the bed like I could fly.
He gave me a knowing look and returned to his drink. I uselessly struggled with the strap of my bag, pulled out the small amber bottle, and measured the dose the doctor had written down.
The liquid was bitter enough to make my face twist. I forced it down anyway.

Connor watched me the entire time, expression unreadable.
“What are you doing?”

“Taking the tonic.” My voice sounded steady and I felt proud of that. “As per the doctor’s prescription.”
He gave a short nod, as if that explained everything. “Get changed. It’s late.”
“Changed?”
“Do you sleep in your pjs or not?”
He was ordering me again but I didn’t have the confidence to tell him off because heat crawled up my neck to think that I was truly going to do it.
My eyes drifted to the wardrobe he had filled weeks ago with clothes that somehow always fit. I crossed the room, pulled out the most modest set of pajamas I could find with long sleeves, full-length pants, and escaped into the bathroom before he could say anything else.
The lock clicked behind me and it felt like I had just survived a war.
How was I going to survive the night? Hopefully, I would fall asleep long before Connor drove me mad with his teasing.
So I stripped quickly, refusing to look at my reflection until I absolutely had to.
When I finally did, the mirror showed the faint, almost-faded marks along my collarbone and the curve of my shoulder.
There were plenty of soft white lines all over my body wherever he had kissed and bit me.
The sight sent a flash of memory so sharp I had to grip the edge of the sink. My eyes fluttered shut as my brain reminded me in exquisite detail how it felt to have his mouth on my skin and the low growl of his throat whenever he bit down.
I shook my head to dispel those thoughts and grabbed the cream the doctor had given me. Scooping generous amounts of it, I applied it to every pulse point I could reach such as the wrists, throat, and the soft skin behind my ears.
The cream didn’t smell unpleasant which was a good thing though it had a strong herbal scent. I hoped Connor or his wolf would find it repulsive.
I washed my hands, stared at myself again, and whispered, “You can do this. Just fall asleep. How hard can it be?”
The girl in the mirror did not look convinced.
When I stepped back out, Connor was still in his jeans and sweater. He turned at the sound of the door and
our eyes met.
His gaze flicked once over the full-coverage pyjamas, lingering just long enough to make my skin prickle, but

he said nothing. He simply extended a hand toward the bed, motioning for me to get in.

I gulped, walked to the headboard, and immediately started rearranging pillows like my life depended on it. Connor sat on the edge of the mattress and began unlacing his boots.
Meanwhile, I kept grabbing every cushion within reach, stacking them in a careful line down the middle of the bed until there was a clear, ridiculous barrier between his side and mine.
He looked up, one boot still in his hand, and raised an eyebrow.
“What are you doing?”
I planted my hands on my hips and surveyed my work. “That’s your side. This is mine. Do not cross.”
His mouth twitched. “You think the pillows would stop me if I really wanted to…”
“I’m serious, Connor.” I snapped at him, not wanting him to finish the line.
“I can see that.” He set the second boot aside and leaned back on his hands, watching me with open
amusement.
