I stared at him.

“What?” My voice sounded like a shriek, cracking slightly on the single syllable.

Despite the cold night air I felt my face go from warm to absolutely blazing in under a second.

Connor’s expression didn’t change at all. He kept looking at me like he’d suggested something entirely reasonable, like getting dinner or checking the weather.

“Tonight,” he added. “Sleep with me on my bed.”

I felt my breath fall short and I took in lungfuls of the cold air at once. I had asked him to go slow and he suggested the extreme option as the first one.

“That’s not how we should…” I was still catching up, my brain lagging several sentences behind my mouth.

“Like really sleep. You know when you close your eyes and suddenly its morning”

“You can’t just say that and then clarify. You have to lead with the clarification.”

“Where’s the fun in that?” His smile widened just slightly, telling me just how effectively he could torture me without even doing anything grand.

“You’re being mean”

He was deliberately being cruel and it was working.

“That’s…cheating,” I was falling short of words. “That’s not flirting, that’s just being an ass.”

“It’s both,” he argued. “I am multitasking.”

“Connor!”

“I’m testing your reaction time,” he clarified, sounding entirely too pleased with himself.

“Purely scientific, of course. Your heart rate just went berserk. And don’t you dare try to deny it because I could hear it.”

“You could not hear my heart rate from three feet away!” The words sounded lame to even my ears.

“I absolutely could,” he nodded. “Do you want me to describe it?”

“N-no need”

But Connor had taken a step in my direction.

“It was fast and uneven for about two seconds.”

:

“Stop right there” I warned him but he still took a step towards me so I stepped back.

“It had settled just a second ago but now its picked up again”

“Connor! Stop!” I said yet he continued coming forward and I felt my back hit the wall, leaving me with no

more space to move.

“It’s racing in anticipation now. You are wondering what is going to happen next…and might I say…” He drawled, dropping his voice another beat.

“…you desperately wish something would actually happen”

He tilted his head slightly, watching me with an amused expression. “It is very useful data. You can document it”

I raised my arm to push him away and give myself some room to breathe.

He didn’t resist and let me shove him because I didn’t believe my body had the energy to make him even budge if he didn’t want to.

I held my head in my hands, shaking it.

“This was a mistake,” I said, mostly to the moon, because looking at him directly felt like a tactical error at this point.

“Too late,” his expression was borderline wicked. “We already made a deal.”

“We made no deal and signed nothing.”

“We agreed on it verbally,” he corrected me. “And as far as I know, verbal contracts are binding.”

“They are not!”

“In werewolf law they absolutely are,” he refused to back down though I had a feeling he came up with that on the spot and was daring me to call him on it.

“I don’t believe that’s a real thing.”

“You can ask Elder Johansson,” he supplied. “He loves talking about pack law, customs and traditions. I am sure he’ll take up an hour of your evening explaining it to you in exhaustive detail.”

I looked around for something to chuck at him, found a stray pebble and threw at him. It him in the shoulder but he didnt so much as blink.

“You need to practice your aim.”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Shut up”

He chuckled darkly and finally put some much needed distance between us.

“I was just giving you a teaser of how your science experiment can go. If you won’t chicken out, which I think is impossible, I will be in my room.”

“I never agreed it would be your bedroom” I replied haughtily.

“It’s a controlled environment,” he explained like I was five.

“You wanted to start slow so it’s better if it’s just the two of us. We should establish a baseline before we escalate to anything more…” He took a small, deliberate pause “…strenuous.”

“Strenuous?” I gawked.

“Testing conditions,” he smiled cheekily. “Did you think of something else?”

I looked at him for a long moment, trying to determine whether agreeing to this was the single worst decision I had made so far.

“Obviously not” I bit out the words as he kept looking at me and pushed his sweater sleeves that had slid downwards a little.

Something was truly mesmerizing about this simple act and he saw the way my eyes heated before I tore them away.

“If you say so,” he muttered.

Something flickered across his face which could have been relief underneath all the teasing, like he’d genuinely wanted me to not second guess my absurd idea and was rejoicing with the thought of having me completely at his mercy.

He didn’t move and neither did I. We stood on the terrace stubbornly, not wanting to be the first one to budge.

The wind picked up again, and was sharp enough that I shivered.

Before I could stop him he’d shrugged out of the black sweater and was holding it out to me. I got a peak of his abs and was horrified as well as excited to see him bare chested again but he was wearing a thin and plain black T-shirt underneath.

I quickly looked at the sweater and the slight goosebumps appearing on his bare forearm that told me I wasn’t the only one feeling cold.

“You’re going to freeze,” I said, pulling it on.

The sweater smelled of him, of cedar and wind and it made a knot loosen in my chest as I let myself be engulfed by it.

I did, however, resist the urge to bury my face in the collar of it, which felt like exactly the kind of reaction the tonic was supposed to be preventing but clearly wasn’t.

“I feel relatively warm,” he explained. “It’s a wolf thing.”

“Convenient.” I mumbled, pulling the sweater closer to myself.

“Very. It looks better on you anyway.”
