Aaron stood frozen by the door, eyes wide with pure, unfiltered horror.
His
gaze
flicked from my dress that was bunched around my thighs, my hands plastered above my head to the wall and to the way Connor and I were breathing hard.
There was no hiding the unmistakable evidence of what we’d just done so his face went sheet-white almost instantly.
“Sia?” His voice cracked. “What the fuck…”
I immediately straightened and adjusted my clothes, brushing my hair with my fingers like that would somehow erase the last twenty minutes.
My face burned and my lips still tingled. Every nerve ending felt too close to the surface, like Connor’s mouth and hands had rearranged the map of my skin and now the hospital air itself was too much.
Connor, to his credit, just pulled his hospital pants up and threw Aaron a bored look.
“What are you doing here?”
He turned around without waiting for an answer and went inside the adjacent washroom, no doubt to clean up. The door clicked shut leaving me to face Aaron.
The sound of water running a second later was the only sound in the room with three people.
Aaron just stood there by the door, unable to decide if he wanted to come inside or turn around and leave.
I walked toward the bed to needlessly smooth the sheets and adjust the pillow, mostly so I wouldn’t have to look at him.
I was fake dating Connor and this was not the first time Aaron had caught me getting frisky with Connor, there was no reason for me to feel ashamed.
Yet I couldnt quite muster the courage to look him in the eye.
So, I focused on the sheets that didn’t need folding even as the metal frame of the bed creaked under my hands. The thin mattress still held the shape of Connor’s body.
Antiseptic and clean cotton and the faint metallic hint of old blood hung in the air, mixing with the darker scent of him that still clung to my skin.
The sound of water running in the washroom was the only noise in the room full of three people for a while.
Then, as if to break the silence, Aaron’s phone rang out loudly and he received it though his eyes were still on

“H-Hello.” He mumbled something on the phone and I only heard Sandra’s name so I tried to tune out the rest of the conversation.
Aaron disconnected the phone, slid it in his pocket and blinked furiously, still at a loss of words.
Meanwhile, Connor stepped out of the bathroom and looked at Aaron, wiping his hands on a towel.
“Why are you still here?”
I narrowed my brows at him. What was the need to be rude to Aaron first thing in the morning? Especially when Aaron looked like someone had just hit him with a truck made of pure secondhand embarrassment.
He just saw us fuck each other when I had given him a piece of my mind about his silence at the trial last night and he was trying to work on that part.
Or he wouldn’t have come to check on Connor. Because nobody else from Connor’s pack or family had paid him a visit so far.
Aaron seemed to recover from his momentary loss of speech and finally muttered, “I… came here to check on you.”
Connor walked back to the bed and sat on it, pulling the sheets up with clipped movements.
He put the IV tube back in place and settled against the pillows, the IV line tugging slightly. Bandages peeked from under the loose hospital shirt they’d given him which he finally decided to put on.
He looked pale under the fluorescent lights, but his expression was that of a pure unimpressed older brother.
“If I wasn’t delirious due to the medicines, I would have almost believed that you cared about me.”
“Connor!” I finally gave him a side-eye, but Connor merely shrugged. “What? I am just stating the obvious.”
Aaron took a step forward and I saw a guilty expression span across his features.
“We may not have the same mother but you are still my brother…and I am sorry for whatever happened back in the arena.”
For once I thought Connor was speechless and for the first time I prayed he would just relax.
He kept staring at Aaron as if he was seeing him for the first time.
And for a second it looked like the two brothers would reconcile.
It was oddly quiet in the cold, sterile room. Monitors beeped somewhere down the hall and a cart rattled past the door. I stood between the two of them like a particularly awkward referee who’d forgotten the rules of the
game.
Connor’s mouth twitched and I felt that hope sinking. It was not quite a smile, more like the ghost of one that had better places to be.
“How touching. Did you rehearse that in the elevator?”

I sighed. It was going to be a long day.
