After the trial, everything was so extreme, I was thinking of going to speak to Alpha Asher and tell him these kinds of trials cause too much stress, especially on you. You’ve been through enough.”
Before I could reply, I heard a humorless chuckle that didn’t originate from me or Aaron.
Connor’s laugh was soft and entirely without humor. He leaned back against the pillows, the metal bedframe creaking under the shift of his weight.
“Sorry if I am mistaken, but I thought I was the one who bled and almost died. Don’t you mean you’re doing it for me, brother?”
Aaron’s mouth opened, closed abruptly and opened again. “I… of course I care that you almost died. That’s why I’m here. But Sienna was also very distressed”
“Lame,” Connor murmured, almost to himself, reached for a grape lying in the fresh fruit bowl Aaron had brought for him and popped it in his mouth, “Try again.”
He sure was talking a lot for someone who had a bandage around his throat and torso.
Aaron’s cheeks went darker. He reached out like he was going to give my shoulder a gentle squeeze, the way he always used to when I was upset.
His fingers were inches from my arm when Connor’s gaze sharpened into something almost golden again.
“If you are done,” Connor began in a clipped tone. “Stop disturbing me. I need rest.”
The words were polite on the surface but the tone was not.
Aaron froze. For once in his life, he actually listened. He withdrew his hand, nodded once, and looked at me instead. “Come on, Sia. Let’s give him space.”
Connor’s reply came before I could formulate a response.
“She’s not going anywhere.”
Aaron looked from me to him. “She is still in the clothes from yesterday. She needs to bathe and have a proper bed to lie down…”
“Don’t worry about that little brother. I can take care of my girlfriend just fine.”
Why was he staking a claim on me all of a sudden?
“But…”
“I want to talk to her. Alone.”

Aaron blinked in confusion like the concept of Connor wanting anything alone with me was still buffering in his brain. “Right. Okay. I’ll… be in the waiting area. Sienna, just come find me when you’re done.”
He lingered another second, eyes flicking between us like he was still trying to process what he had just walked in on then he turned and left. The door closed with a soft click.
And Connor closed his eyes, sighing like he was finally able to get rid of a nuisance.
I turned to Connor with my arms folded across my chest, mostly to hide the way my hands were still shaking. The residual heat between my legs hadn’t faded. Every time I shifted my weight I could feel him still between my thighs. My lips felt swollen and my neck still burned where his teeth had been.
“What is the meaning of all this?” I asked.
Connor didn’t answer but leaned his head back against the pillows. The fluorescent lights made the shadows under them look deeper.
“I need rest.”
That was it?
He gave me no explanation, no apology for the sudden ice in his voice. There was also no acknowledgment that ten minutes ago he’d been pure hunger.
I stared at him with a disbelieving look.
“You wanted to talk to me. So talk”
He only threw a hand over his eyes to block the light like I had never spoken.
Maybe it was the meds and the blood loss that was making him cranky.
The trial and the draught had put him in this bed in the first place and messed with his wolf over and over.
That had to be it. People got cranky when they’d nearly died. This was the only reasonable explanation for his sudden mood swings.
“Fine,” I said, softer than I meant to. “I’ll leave you alone to rest.”
I turned toward the door and reached for the cool metal of the doorknob. My fingers had just closed around it when I heard the faintest ruffle of sheets behind me.
One second he was on the bed. The next he was right behind me, faster than anyone covered in bandages and still hooked to an IV had any right to move.
His hand covered mine on the doorknob as golden light flickered in the reflection of the small window set into the door.
When I turned my head, his eyes were pure wolf again, bright and possessive and completely at odds with the pale, bandaged man who’d just claimed he needed rest.
