I had no good answer for that. Before I knew about the scent malfunction, climbing into his bed had felt dangerous in a different way. Now it felt like walking into a test I had designed myself and was already failing.
I switched tactics, desperate to regain some ground. “Can you still smell me?”
Connor had already closed his eyes, one arm folded behind his head. He didn’t open them
“I asked you something.”
“Yes,”
My stomach dropped. “Yes? You can smell my.”
“I can smell that I’m not alone in this room.” His voice was mild. “And that you’re nervous. And that you put on far too much of that herbal cream so I feel like we are in a moss covered, damp room.”
Annoyed, I grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it at him. He caught it without looking, then calmly set it back on the barrier I had built.
“Violent already? The tonic must be working overtime.”
“Shut up and go to sleep.”
“I will if you will.” He shifted slightly on the mattress. The movement made the entire bed dip, and my knee brushed his leg through the sheets for half a second before I jerked away. The brief contact sent a spark straight up my spine.
Connor’s eyes opened. He looked at the place where my knee had been, then at my face.
“Careful,” he said softly. “That almost counted as crossing the border.”
“It was an accident.”
“Mm.” He closed his eyes again, but the corner of his mouth remained curved. “Try not to assault me in my sleep, then. I’m very delicate.”
I made a frustrated sound, tugged the hem of my top down for no reason, and slid fully under the sheets. I turned my back to him, pulled the covers up to my chin, and stared at the wall in front of me with extreme concentration.
I tried to count sheep, think about Elder Johanson’s face. I tried to think about anything except the man on the other side of the pillow wall who could smell every single time my pulse jumped.
The mattress shifted as he settled more comfortably. I felt the warmth of him even through the ridiculous barrier of cushions.

Every time I breathed I was aware of how close he was. Every time the sheets rustled I had to force myself not to turn around and buried my head in the pillow, stifling a groan.
“You’re moving too much,” Connor murmured after a while, voice already half-asleep and unfairly soft.
“I’m thinking about how much I regret this entire plan.”
“Too late now.” His voice sounded so dreamy. “Your heart is racing. I can hear it”
“Then stop listening!!”
“I can’t because its too loud.” He shifted on the mattress and this time his foot brushed mine under the covers.
It was the lightest accidental slide of skin against fabric and he quickly pulled his foot away before I could call him out on that. “Sorry.”
He didn’t sound sorry at all.
I was used to sprawling on my bed all by myself and the few times I did share a bed with him, I would be too tired after the sex or the constant events at Ashford manor to stay awake. But now it felt like my entire body was hyper awake.
“Wait, I didn’t ask you. Do you snore?”
Connor pretended to not hear me so I propped myself on my elbows and tried again.
“Do you snore or not?”
“You will find out in a while because I am very sleepy.”
I chucked a cushion at him and yet again he caught it without even opening his eye for a second. I was truly envious of the werewolf hearing, of all the werewolf senses his wolf bestowed upon him while I was here struggling with my wolf.
He placed the pillow back again in its spot and I thought of drinking a cup of hot milk to ease my mind into sleep because I couldn’t sit still with so many thoughts in my head.
So, I got up and reached for the door. “Connor, do you want…”
He began snoring though I had been speaking to him a second ago.
“Connor, you…”
He snored even loudly and I let out a disgruntled groan and stepped outside the room. The night had fallen quiet and dark. And I was glad that the living room was empty because that meant I wouldn’t run into anybody accidentally.

That alerted me so I slowly turned around and tiptoed towards the kitchen door to take a peek outside.
Was I imagining things or was my wolf going cranky because I saw nobody at first. But then just near the staircase I saw two figures huddled together.
I hid behind the door and looked outside through the tiny creak between the door and the wall. I was surprised to see Sandra and Elder Johanson talking something.
I placed my ears on the door, hoping to eavesdrop but they had apparently sensed someone was around and lowered their voices even further.
What was Sandra discussing with the old man at such an hour? And why had she taken my name?
