Chapter 151
Sienna
I woke up feeling like someone had stuffed my head with cotton and then kicked it down a flight of stairs.
My eyes refused to open properly and the morning light filtering through the curtains felt like somebody was shooting lasers in my eyes.
I groaned and buried my head in the pillow but then a phone notification pinged annoyingly near my ear. I searched for my phone that was buried under the sheets and was going to toss it on the bedside table when my barely open eyes saw Connor’s name flash on the screen.
I blinked furiously trying to blink the sleep out of my eyes but the name still stayed. He never messaged so early in the morning so I sleepily clicked on it, half expecting to see a message about elder Johanson being cranky again.
However, I was surprised to see the message.
Connor: Take a day off today from elder duties. We can manage a day without the future Luna of the pack.
My thoughts had already drifted to him, the way he was smiling and telling me about his childhood, the way we laughed and talked like he was my best friend, not Aaron.
I held my phone closer to my heart and sighed, trying not to blush but then I recalled just about everything else he had told me last night and my eyes flew wide open and threw the phone away like it had burned me.
I sat up so fast the room spun. My heart was already racing as I scrambled for my phone on the nightstand, knocking over a half-empty glass of water in the process.
At first, I was going to reply to him stating I would arrive at the Ashford mansion anyway but then it was a perfect way to work on my problem.
But I couldn’t do it alone.
I just hit Jane’s name and pressed the phone to my ear.
It rang four times before she picked up, and when she did her voice told me that she deeply resented being woken up.
“You better pray to the Moon Goddess to save you from my wrath,” she said, around what sounded like a yawn she was trying to smother.
“I was up until three finishing my stats assignment and if you’re calling to tell me that Aaron or Sandra were bothering you, I would ask you to hire a hitman to shoot them.”
“It’s an emergency,” I said.
“Define emergency.”
Temptation
“Jane.” My voice came out strangled. “Emergency. Code: I-want-to-crawl-into-a-hole-and-die-because-I’m- awakening-my-wolf.”
“Oh my goddess, you are finally…” She began congratulating me but I cut her. “Hold back on your wishes.”
There was a rustle of sheets on the other end. “I’m listening. But if this is about another emotional crisis involving Connor, I’m charging interest. No more free therapy for you”
I dragged a hand down my face and started talking in a rush, recapping all the important bits in such a hurry that when I was done I was breathless.
For a few minutes, she didn’t speak anything at all and I only heard my own ragged breathing.
Then Jane made a sound that was half gasp, half delighted wheeze.
“You’re telling me your body has been scent-flirting with him and you had no idea?”
“My scent was basically screaming ‘claim me’ to him so I want to disappear permanently.” I groaned.
“I’m sorry,” she wheezed. “I’m sorry, I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that your body is basically walking around wearing a neon sign that says AVAILABLE, TAKE ME, and only Connor can read the sign”
I groaned again and flopped back onto the pillows. “I hate you.”
“You love me” She corrected me.
“Jane, this isn’t funny.”
“It’s extremely funny,” she said, still gasping. “It’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you of all the stuff you lately told me. Okay, I’m serious now.”
She took an audible breath, and I could hear the gears turning, and I braced myself. “We need a plan.”
“That’s what I called for.”
“Okay, so we need to find a way for your body to stop flashing an invitation at him right? So, the first solution is that we douse you in pure wolfsbane and garlic. You’ll smell like a walking ‘do not approach’ sign. It sounds very effective though it could be slightly toxic. You also will probably become immune to vampires as a bonus, if that’s a thing,
“I’m not bathing in wolfsbane.”
“Fine. Second idea how about we make Connor wear nose plugs.? I’ll even buy the cute ones with little wolf ears on them.”
“Nope”
“Option three, you carry a spray bottle of ice water and every time he looks at you for more than three seconds you spritz yourself directly in the face like a bad houseplant.”
“That sounds humiliating.”
The Wrong Brother’s Temptation
“Very” I thought I heard her giggle.
“Last idea,” she said, already laughing. “You can become a temporary nun. Sexy nun? Wait, no. that’s a bad idea. Forget the sexy nun part.”
Despite everything, despite the fact that I’d called her at seven in the morning in a genuine crisis, I was laughing, because Jane had a talent for making even the most mortifying situations feel survivable by making them ridiculous first.
A weak, broken laugh escaped me. “I am this close to ending our friendship.”
“No you’re not.” Her voice softened just a fraction.
“Okay. Now lets get to the real talk now that you aren’t panicking. Your problem is well beyond my capabilities so I think we need an actual specialist, a female doctor who handles wolf shiftings and awakenings”
I immediately got up from the bed.
“I am not going to my pack doctor because she will tell my mom and then it will be even more embarrassing. I wont see the Ashford pack doctor either”
Jane’s tone turned slightly teasing. “Connor would have really loved to accompany you to the doctor visit”
I warned her. “This stays between you and me”
Jane chuckled. “Fine then, let’s go to some other doctor. In fact, I might actually know one. Get dressed. I’m coming over.”
I clutched my phone. “You are? I thought you wanted to sleep”
She seemed to grin. “Oh I wouldn’t want to miss this for anything. I could even use this information for one of my assignments. But mostly, because I want to see what the doctor says.”
She hung up before I could argue.
I stared at the phone, then forced myself out of bed.
My reflection looked exactly as wrecked as I felt. I washed my face, pulled on jeans and a soft sweater, and paced the length of my room until the doorbell rang downstairs.
I arrived at the bottom of the stairs to find Jane already being ushered into the kitchen by mother, and Jane shot me a look over her shoulder that clearly communicated I tried.
“We were just heading out, mom,” I started.
“Nonsense.” My mother was already steering Jane toward the kitchen, already pulling plates down.
