The Wrong Brother's Temptation novel Chapter 152

Chapter 152

Sienna

My mother’s face changed instantly. “The doctor?” She turned to me, alarm blooming fast on her face.

“Who’s sick? Sienna, are you sick?”

“Nobody’s sick,” I said, glaring at Jane, who had the decency to look mildly guilty around a mouthful of fries.

“There’s a sale,” Jane said quickly, recovering. “At the mall. We wanted to get there early before it gets crowded.”

Mom looked from her to me. “You do look a little pale, sweetheart. I believe that you’ve had a tough week at the Ashfords”

“About that, why do you ask Connor about my health instead of calling me directly?”

I asked and then realized Jane had stopped eating. Apparently, I had forgotten that tiny tidbit.

“He is your boyfriend and he promised to look after you. And I know things must be getting hard right now”

Jane laughed hard and then pretended to cough.

“Oh dear, are you alright” Mom passed her a glass of water and she took it from my mother teary eyed.

I shot Jane what I assumed was a venomous glare.

“Yes, she is making things hard for Connor, very hard…” Jane grinned, despite coughing and I stomped my foot on hers again.

“Shut up!”

“What?” Mom looked worried. “Sienna, what are you doing at the Ashfords? You are expected to behave like a good future luna…”

Mom launched into a lecture because for some reason she readily believed I was the one making it difficult

for Connor.

In a way it was true but I was going to fix that exact problem today.

“Maybe you should see Dr. Whitfield, just to be safe”

“No need,” Jane said, through another mouthful of fries, fully aware of the grenade she’d just casually tossed into the conversation and enjoying it, “we’re already going to one.”

“JANE! You need some sleep because you are rambling”

I stomped on her foot under the table. She coughed, grabbed her water glass, drank half of it in one go, and set it down with watering eyes.

“Did I say doctor,” she wheezed. “I meant the shopping mall. There’s a sale. We are going to buy her a nice dress for a friend’s birthday party”

“Is Connor going to be around?”

I blinked. “He isn’t friends with the entire town, mom. Besides now we have to really go”

My mother looked between us, clearly suspicious, but she still hovered, pushing more food onto our plates. I ate as fast as humanly possible, then stood up and grabbed Jane’s wrist.

“We’re full. Thank you. We have to go before the sale ends.”

I dragged Jane out of the kitchen and up the stairs before my mother could protest further.

The second we were inside my room I locked the door, spun around, and launched into a furious whisper-

rant.

“Are you insane? You told my mother we were going to a doctor!”

Jane held up both hands.

“I came here at seven in the morning,” Jane said, cutting me off, arms crossed, “on zero sleep, having eaten nothing since yesterday afternoon because I was too deep in a stats assignment to remember food exists. I think I’m allowed one slip.”

I opened my mouth, then closed it. The righteous anger deflated a little.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “You’re right. Thank you for coming.”

“That’s better,” she said, immediately mollified, because Jane’s grudges had approximately the lifespan of a soap bubble. “Bribe me with food later and we’re square.”

“Deal.”

She flopped onto my bed, suddenly serious. “Okay. Now tell me everything properly. What exactly do you feel when you’re around him? What symptoms do you have? Tell me everything in detail. We can’t just go to the doctor if we cant describe the issue properly.”

“I don’t really know what counts as a symptom”

“Do you get chills around him?” she asked. “Rapid breathing? Does your heart do the thing?”

“What thing?”

“The thing,” she said, gesturing vaguely at her own chest. “The racing thing. The oh-no-he’s-looking-at-me thing.”

“I mean…yes,” I admitted in a small voice. “Sometimes.”

“Sometimes,” she repeated, unconvinced. “Sienna, be honest. How much do you want to throw yourself at that man on a regular basis?”

“Jane!”

“Okay that’s a solid eight then”

“What?”

“On a scale of one to ten,” she ticked off an imaginary box sounding undeterred, “Do you want to worship him? Like, do you want to go down on your knees and…”

“JANE!”

“These are all valid questions, Sienna. And that was a solid eleven”

“Are you out of your mind?”

“Do you ever imagine dragging him into a corner and just…” she made a tearing motion with both hands, mimicking fabric ripping, “…tearing his clothes off with your teeth…”

“I have never said any of that.”

“You didn’t have to,” she said, delighted, pointing at my face, which had apparently turned a color she found extremely satisfying. “That face said all of it for you.”

“Stop making me feel miserable”

Jane sat up, looking far too pleased with herself.

“Okay. We’ve established that your wolf has excellent taste and terrible timing. And that this problem does need a specialist. So, go get your bag. We’re going to the doctor.”

I grabbed my bag, still red in the face, and followed her out the door.

Mom was still in the kitchen when we climbed down the stairs.

“I’m leaving, mom and will return late.”

Mom wiped her hands on a kitchen towel. “Is this friend of yours good? Maybe you can introduce Connor to this friend and he can join you in the birthday party.”

I grew slightly irritated.

“Mom, I am not five. Besides, I have Jane with me.”

Mom nodded. “Yes, but she can’t fight rogues if they attack you. Or creeps for that matter.”

Oh, right. She must have heard about Rory already.

I went towards her and pulled her into a hug.

“Don’t worry, mom. We might not even go to the party and just hang out at Jane’s place.”

Mom seemed to sigh in relief.

“That’s good then”

“Don’t worry, I will be fine” I reassured her and then we were finally out of my home and ran straight toward the car.

Jane settled in the driver’s seat and we had just pulled out of the pack gate when my phone rang.

It was a call from Connor.

Why was he calling me at such an hour? Jane’s eyes almost popped up on seeing his name and she urged me to receive it and put it on speaker.

I huffed and did as she asked.

“Hello?”

“I asked you to relax for the day and you are going out already?”

“How did you even…” I began but realized the answer to my question before I had completed the sentence.
