Chapter 150
Sienna
I went inside and my eyes fell on the worn copy of Peter Rabbit.
I turned the pages slowly, carefully, hoping for something to pop up that would explain why his mother aske me to bring this particular story to her.
I truly wished she wasn’t delirious when she told me that and the book would hold some clues to help me figure out what was truly going on.
To my utter disappointment, there were no hidden notes, folded letters or strange symbols in the book. It looked like a regular story book with soft illustrations and the faint scent of old
paper.
No, this couldn’t be it, there had to be something more. Or maybe my mind was inventing things.
When I looked back, I saw Connor still standing outside the cottage. He had his hands in his pockets and was looking at me.
Again, he didn’t look away. This time I held his gaze instead of looking away, taking in the sight of the gorgeous man with inky hair spilling over his head as moonlight illuminated his face, his sharp eyes that seemed to twinkle like stars.
Even from here I could see the topmost button of his shirt that was undone, the wind fleeting past him and giving me a peak at his broad chest.
I blinked rapidly to not let my mind stray then frowned.
“You said you were going to fight it for me”
He took a long, deep breath and I saw his shoulders sag. “Which is why I am twenty feet away from you…”
Oh shit. I crossed my legs involuntarily.
He trailed off but then his voice hitched. “…but imagine you are craving cinnamon bread and you smell it all around you 24/7 but you have to force yourself to not reach for it.”
Crave?
Did he say…
Ok, I was not going to complete that thought so I finally looked away. He still hadn’t.
And I realized I was making it difficult for him too. Annoying even to have a decent conversation when my body was inviting him every second.
Stupid wolf!
After a long silence I closed the book and looked at him, trying to steer the conversation.

“Can I borrow this?”
He seemed genuinely surprised. “Peter Rabbit?”
I nodded, thumb brushing the worn cover. “I keep realizing I still don’t know the version of you that existed when you weren’t busy making my life miserable.”
Connor studied my face for several quiet seconds, all traces of teasing vanished. “You really want to?”
“I do.”
“Then keep it.”
I didn’t expect him to say yes so easily.
“What?”
“I’ve never lent these books to anyone.” He added. “In fact, I didn’t even think you were truly interested in them to begin with. I just thought you just said that out of kindness.”
Shoot, I wasn’t being truly kind. Yet again, I was hiding stuff from him when he had let me in on his secrets, his cherished memories.
I promised myself that I would tell him everything when I found out enough. And hoped he would trust me.
“You’re the first person I’ve ever brought here….and probably you will be the only one”
The words settled deep in my chest, making me feel even more guilty.
I hugged the book lightly against myself as if it would comfort me the same way it did to him.
Connor seemed to tilt his head to the side and watched me curiously.
“What?”
He shrugged. “Nothing”
Then he began walking towards the cottage, towards me and my willed my body to not react and stay perfectly still.
He gently took the book from me, opened the cover, and wrote something inside with a fountain pen that had been resting nearby. Then he handed it back.
I looked down.
“I didn’t ask for your autograph”
He smiled. “Yeah, but its leaving this cottage so wanted to stamp my ownership on it”
A smile spread across my lips despite everything.

“You’re insane”
Connor finally grinned, slow and satisfied.
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
I stifled a yawn and then Connor looked at his wrist watch.
“I robbed you of your sleep. Let’s get you back to your home.”
I nodded though he noticed the way my smile wavered a little.
“Did I say something wrong?”
I pushed the hair fluttering due to the wind behind my ear.
“The elders are going to stay for a while. Do you think I should go back to my place?”
That teasing smile returned.
“Are you trying to find ways to not leave me?”
I slapped him with the book in my hand. “Shut up”
“I think you should go meet your mom once in a while. She gets worried about you.”
I raised my brows at that.
“She calls you?”

Connor nodded. “Because its my pack business and she understands how fussy elders are, she doesnt mind you staying over. But she also worries if my pack elders are giving you a hard time.”
I frowned. She was my mother and yet she didn’t call or text me. Why did she trust Connor so much with me?
“So I told her that I would drop you to your place tonight though it’s almost nearing dawn now.”
He then gestured towards his car. “Shall we?”
I nodded and then we walked towards his car while I held the collection of peter rabbit close.
I had gotten the book, the next step was to visit his mother alone.
We got inside the car and I sat with the book in my lap, chewing my lower lip.
Connor turned the ignition on and I still kept wondering how to ask him that question.
“What is it?”
He asked after a while.
The Wrong Brother’s Temptation
I turned to look at him.
“Spit it out”
“Does my wolf or body also tell you how to read my mind?”
Connor shook his head. “You do. Now tell me”

I hesitated. “I was thinking about our last hospital visit and how your mother reacts when she sees you.”
I saw his hands grip the steering wheel a bit too tightly when I said that, the only indication that he had heard
“So, I was wondering if I should go meet her alone. Just to see if she would react differently.”
Connor turned to look at me sharply.
“You would do that?”
I blinked, not expecting him to ask that.
