Chapter 328
“… Understood.”
Simon nodded respectfully and quietly backed out of the room.
The suite fell completely silent. Silas’s gaze softened slightly as he let the woman rest the entire weight of her cheek against his palm.
She was sleeping fitfully. Unnatural patches of red still clung to her cheeks, and a fresh sheen of crystalline sweat had beaded on the forehead he’d just wiped clean.
Silas grabbed a tissue and gently dabbed the moisture away.
“it hurts…”
Muttering the word in a daze, the woman shifted her head away, as if instinctually rejecting any physical contact. Taking the hint, Silas simply sat in the chair beside the bed, making no further moves to touch her.
That night, the lights in the hospital director’s office stayed on until dawn.
After thoroughly investigating the timeline, the director discovered that two of his nurses had indeed accepted bribes.
He was nearing retirement age and had built a highly respected reputation over the years. But because of this single incident, a lifetime of good standing had been obliterated.
“You… are completely out of your minds! Did you even pause to consider who Silas Sterling is? To put it bluntly, the Sterling family practically owns this hospital. And tonight, your greed nearly destroyed his wife!”
The two nurses were paralyzed with fear. One of them actually dropped to her knees.
“Director… we had no idea it was Mrs. Sterling!”
“And Mr. Fowler said he was just checking in on a friend. Who could have known… Please, you have to
help us. We’re begging you…”
The director let out a heavy, exhausted sigh and yanked his hands away from their grasp. “I can barely save myself right now. How am I supposed to save you? You brought this on yourselves. Go explain it to the cops!”
Who in their right mind dared to cross the Sterling family?
Having the police handle it strictly by the book was already the most merciful outcome they could hope for.
After downing more than half the glass, the agonizing dryness in her throat finally eased. Vivian licked her lips, her dark eyes locking onto him. “Why are you here?”
Silas’s expression remained unreadable. He placed the glass on the bedside table.
He had been awake practically all night, yet there wasn’t a trace of fatigue on his face. His hair just lacked its usual meticulous styling, giving him an edge of untamed ferocity.
Instead of answering her question, he reached out and touched her forehead.
The burning fever had subsided, leaving behind only a mild warmth.
“Does it still hurt anywhere?” he asked.
“Yes.”
Vivian’s eyes wavered as the terrifying memory of earlier that night crashed over her. “My heart hurts.”
Her soft, weak voice sounded like she was listing off his crimes. “You just left me there and didn’t care. Did you ever stop to think about what would happen to me? If Harrison had actually succeeded… would you have regretted it?”
