Before Carter had returned, she had quickly looked up the book's latest auction price on her phone. It was valued at a staggering 12 million dollars.

Carter narrowed his eyes. "You like reading?"

Jocelyn paused for a moment before suddenly letting out a soft laugh. "You really never paid any attention to me at all, did you?"

That was why he didn't even know the simplest things about her likes or dislikes.

Her laugh made his chest tighten painfully, as if something that inherently belonged to him was slowly slipping through his fingers.

"What happened today was just a misunderstanding. I'll make things clear to my mother and Jeannie. As for all that talk about a divorce, don't take it to heart. I'm not going to divorce you!" Carter's voice trailed off, laced with a rare hint of apology. "I know I haven't cared enough about you in the past. From now on, I'll do better."

Jocelyn looked at the man standing in front of her in complete silence.

It was a shame they no longer had a "from now on."

She was going to divorce him and sever this toxic marriage once and for all!

The next day, Jocelyn went directly to Edgar's corporate headquarters to return *The Avian Manuscripts*.

"Mr. Barrett, I finished reading the book last night. Thank you for lending it to me," she said.

"I believe I had my driver tell you it was a gift," Edgar replied coolly.

"It's far too valuable. We aren't close enough for me to accept something like this," she stated.

"If it fails to bring you joy, then no matter how valuable it is, it's just a stack of bound paper," he said, his expression impassive. "If you don't like it, just throw it in the trash."

Jocelyn was utterly speechless. It was worth 12 million dollars. How could she possibly throw it away?

Not to mention, she genuinely loved the book.

"Mr. Barrett, what exactly do you want?" she asked, frowning.
