Jeannie stared at the phone in total disbelief. Jocelyn had actually dared to refuse her!
The sheer disrespect was unbelievable. She swore she would make Jocelyn pay for this!
——
Carter stared at the project proposal Jeannie had submitted. The content was an absolute disaster. It looked like it had been haphazardly copied and pasted from completely different documents, with sections directly contradicting each other.
"This is what you put together after taking over the project? You honestly think we can secure a deal with this garbage?" he roared.
Thinking back to the flawless proposals Jocelyn used to hand in—documents he never even had to double-check—only made his chest feel tighter with frustration.
"Carter, it's because she refused to do a proper handover! She intentionally left out critical details. That's why I couldn't write it properly!" Jeannie whined defensively.
"Shut up!" he snapped. "You begged to be put in charge of this, so I handed you a massive project! And this is the trash you give me? How am I supposed to trust you with anything moving forward?"
"It's all her fault! She set me up to fail! Carter, you should have divorced a toxic woman like her a long time ago!" Jeannie egged him on.
"Enough! Don't let me hear you say that again. She married me when I had absolutely nothing. I am not divorcing her!" he fired back. He berated her for another ten minutes before finally kicking her out of his office.
That night, he was summoned back to the family home by an angry phone call from his mother.
"How could you yell at your sister like that?" Ursula scolded. "She just graduated college, of course she lacks experience. Messing up one document isn't the end of the world."
"Besides, this is all Jocelyn's doing. She's not just sabotaging your sister; she's sabotaging me! If it weren't for her interference, I would have gotten an appointment with Dr. Fletcher by now. She's trying to make me go blind!"
The appointment issue had been driving him crazy.
He had paid extra for a VIP slot and hired people to refresh the booking system, but Dr. Fletcher's schedule was just too tight. Everyone else was throwing money at the problem too, meaning he still couldn't secure a spot. He had no choice but to have his mother see a different specialist in the meantime.
Listening to his mother drone on and on about every little ache and pain in her eyes, he suddenly found himself deeply missing the days when Jocelyn handled all of this.
