In an instant, a sharp pang pierced his chest!
"What's wrong?" Yolande asked, sensing his sudden tension from where he was shielding her in his arms.
"N-nothing," Carter murmured, pressing his dry lips together.
There was no way Jocelyn would ever leave him. He must have just imagined it.
The gunshots ceased after a few rounds. The Barrett family's security personnel quickly stormed into the restaurant, surrounding the middle-aged man who had fired the weapon. The gun in the man's trembling hand was aimed directly at Edgar Barrett. A tense standoff settled over the room.
"Edgar Barrett... my brother went bankrupt because of your family! His whole life was destroyed, and I'm going to make you pay for his life with yours!" the man shouted, his voice laced with venom.
"Is that so?" Even with a gun pointed at him, not a single ripple of emotion crossed Edgar's handsome face. Instead, he slowly walked toward his attacker.
"There are plenty of people who want my life. Do you really think you can take it?"
The man clearly hadn't expected his target to approach him. Panic set in, and he raised his gun, ready to fire again.
But in the next split second, the Barrett family's bodyguards tackled him from behind, pinning him hard to the floor.
The shot went wild, the bullet grazing past Edgar.
Yet, his expression didn't change in the slightest, as if getting shot at was of no consequence whatsoever.
"Let me go!" the man screamed, thrashing wildly.
A bodyguard respectfully presented the confiscated weapon to his boss. "Mr. Barrett, if you please."
Edgar took the gun, turning it over in his hands before casually pointing the barrel at the man's temple.
"W-what are you doing?" the man stammered, his voice trembling.
"Since you dared to shoot at me, didn't you consider the consequences?" Edgar asked coolly, his long fingers slowly pulling back on the trigger.
