Chapter 68 

Felicia planned to steal Sophie’s gold locket when there was no one home. She would put it in the pocket of one of Melanie’s clothes in her bedroom. 

She expected Sophie to realize that the gold locket was lost when she returned. Sophie was sure to kick up a fuss and start looking for it. 

She was confident that Melanie would be the first to be suspected. After all, nothing in the Grayson residence had ever been lost, but the gold locket had somehow disappeared as soon as Melanie had arrived. How could they not suspect her? 

Moreover, she came from the countryside and knew little about anything. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that she would steal something because she liked it. Felicia almost laughed out loud at the thought of her perfect plan. 

As expected, Sophie returned to her room to do her homework after dinner. When she looked up and saw that her gold locket was gone, she was immediately shocked. She ran in a panic to the living room to say that she had lost it. 

“I keep it on my dressing table all the time! How could I lose it? Dad, Mom, help me find it!” 

It was clear that Sophie was very anxious. After all, it was an expensive present, and she liked it very much. 

Melanie had been sitting there, eating fruits. When she heard that Sophie had lost something, she also got up to help her look for it. 

No one thought that the gold locket had been stolen. They thought that Sophie had simply dropped it by mistake somewhere. 

Then Felicia walked over to Sophie to whisper in her ear. “Sophie, do you think someone stole your gold locket? That would be crossing the line! How can family steal from one other?” 

At Felicia’s hint, Sophie immediately thought of Melanie. She pushed open Melanie’s bedroom door fiercely and began rummaging through it. Melanie was startled, but she soon realized that she was the target. 

Felicia had stuffed the gold locket into the pocket of a shirt that Melanie had hung up, so it wasn’t hard to find. Sophie found it before long. 

The Graysons gathered at the door and fell silent when they saw what had happened. An awkward atmosphere spread throughout the room as everyone eyed Melanie suspiciously. 

Sophie could not remain calm. She pointed at Melanie and yelled, “Explain this to me! Why is my gold locket in your pocket? When did you steal my stuff?” She was so furious that the veins on her forehead were bulging. She did not seem to be faking it. 

Melanie looked perfectly calm. She had run through the entire incident in her mind and soon guessed what had happened. 

Someone wanted to frame her. She could not prevent it, as they all lived under one roof. 

“Believe me or not, but the truth is that I have no idea what’s going on,” Melanie said calmly, enunciating every word. 

Sophie was even angrier at Melanie’s attitude. 

“Are you still going to try and fake it? If you didn’t steal it, why would it be in your pocket? Everyone knows that you’re from the country and that you’re poor. You’ve probably never even seen gold, have you? You can’t steal other people’s things even if you like it. My parents gave me this for my birthday. How could you be so dishonest?” Sophie said scornfully, with no regard for Melanie at all.
