Chapter 61 

Sophie felt her resentment toward Felicia deepen as she thought about how her parents had scolded her at breakfast that morning. Even Edward had given her t cold shoulder. She wondered why she was being blamed and made out to be the bad guy. 

What irked her the most was Edward’s growing favoritism. It was bad enough that her parents had scolded her, but he had also encouraged them to cut her allowance. To her surprise, they agreed. 

With these thoughts weighing on her mind, Sophie couldn’t focus in class and sighed heavily. 

A close friend from her neighborhood, Lilith Hensley, noticed her distress and couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong? Are you sick?” 

Sophie glanced at Lilith. Since Lilith was someone she could confide in, she recounted the previous night’s events. 

Upon hearing the story, Lilith frowned. “I don’t want to speak ill of Felicia, but honestly, she seems to be quite scheming. Even if you don’t like Melanie, she doesn’t mean you any harm and even gifted you that dress. 

“You should have just accepted it. But Felicia had you stir up trouble instead. Now look what’s happened. You’ve been scolded at home, and she didn’t even defen you.” 

Lilith was sharper than Sophie. She had never liked Felicia. Since joining the Grayson family, Felicia had always followed the rules strictly and rarely mingled with her peers. Lilith thought Felicia just seemed peculiar. 

Sophie had only felt a hint of resentment at first, but hearing Lilith’s perspective made her angrier. 

Lilith’s words made sense. If Sophie had accepted the dress last night, she could have worn it that day and avoided the scolding from her family. 

But because of Felicia’s meddling, she ended up losing both the dress and her allowance. When her parents mentioned docking her allowance in the morning, Felicia didn’t say a single word in her defense either. 

“Why would she do that?” Sophie asked. 

Lilith patted her shoulder. “Honestly, you’re really naive. She clearly doesn’t like Melanie either, but she’s better at hiding it and can keep her cool.” Sophie fell silent, her expression darkening. 

When she got home that evening, she stormed into Felicia’s room to confront her. 

“Felicia, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been scolded by Dad and Mom. Now they’ve cut my allowance! I don’t care. You need to make up that money for me.” Sophie usually had a decent relationship with Felicia, so even when she was angry, she wouldn’t say anything too harsh. 

Felicia’s lips twitched at Sophie’s demand. She questioned why she should give the latter money as requested. 

Although the Grayson family had treated her well, she still had relatives back home who relied on her for support. Her own finances were tight. 

“It really hurts to hear you say that, Sophie. I reminded you last night because I know you have a strong sense of pride and don’t care about material things. If you think I was wrong for doing that, I won’t interfere in your life again.” 

As Felicia spoke, her eyes turned red with a hint of grievance. 

Sophie had come to confront her in a fit of fury, but upon seeing Felicia’s reaction, she relented. “Don’t cry, Felicia. I was just venting. I didn’t mean it that way. Fine. I won’t ask you for money, okay?” 

Felicia sneaked a glance at Sophie. When she noted that the latter had taken the bait, she changed the topic. “By the way, do you know that Tanner is back?” This announcement sent Sophie’s heart racing. 

“What did you just say? Tanner is back? When? Why don’t I know about this?” she exclaimed, her eyes widening with excitement. 

Felicia quiddy covered her ears. “Hush! Lower your voice! You’re going to make me deaf. I bumped into him at the neighborhood entrance after work, and we exchanged pleasantries.” 

Sophie barely registered the rest of Felicia’s words before rushing out the door. 

Felicia couldn’t help but smirk as she watched Sophie hurry off. 

Everyone knew that Sophie had a crush on Tanner. She had followed him around since they were kids. But Tanner was five years older and would never see her as anything more than a young gin. 

In the years before, Tanner had been serving in the military and had hardly returned home, ite had been promoted quickly, but after being injured on a mission, he finally retumed to civilian life.
