Chapter 56
As Melanie finished counting the day’s eamings, she wondered if Edward would come by to pick her up.
Meanwhile, Edward had indeed planned to do so after work but was intercepted by Gabrielle just as he left his office. She had heard about the upcoming diplomatic event requiring spouses‘ attendance and saw an opportunity. Convinced that Melanie would embarrass Edward, Gabrielle decided to offer herself as a replacement.
“Ms. Graham, is there something you need?” Edward asked, maintaining a professional tone.
“Mr. Grayson, I know about the upcoming diplomatic event that requires you to bring your wife. Obviously, Melanie isn’t suitable for such an occasion. I could help by attending in her place, and I’m sure the higher–ups would understand,” Gabrielle suggested, feigning concern for Edward’s reputation
After all, if Melanie could not attend, Edward would have to find someone else to fill her place. While it was not an honorable thing to do, as no one would bring a ” fake” wife to such an important event, this was a special case that required consideration of all aspects.
Nonetheless, hearing Gabrielle’s suggestion only strengthened Edward’s resolve to maintain strict professional boundaries with her. Despite knowing he was married, she showed questionable judgment by mentioning something so inappropriate.
“That won’t be necessary. I have it handled,” Edward replied curtly, attempting to step around her.
Gabrielle persisted, blocking his path again. “Mr. Grayson, you can’t seriously be considering taling Mellanie! Please be reasonable!”
While they had grown up together, Edward felt an unusual wave of irritation at Gabrielle’s insistence. He thought that her lack of self–awareness was becoming troublesome
“I can handle my professional obligations without your concem,” he stated firmly but politely. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to pick up my wife.”
Although he remained courteous, his firm tone and professional distance frustrated Gabrielle, leaving her visibly uneasy. Edward had once felt close enough to touch, but now he felt as distant as a star in the night sky,
Even after Edward drove away from the office, Gabrielle stood frozen while sympathetic female colleagues gathered around her. Edward was considered the ultimate catch. He was from a wealthy family, had good looks, of a young age, and held a high position. It was not an exaggeration to say be was everything a woman could want.
Many young women in the office had fantasized about him, only to be shocked by his sudden marriage. Moreover, spreading, the thought of Edward attending with his “country bumpkin” wite only drove them crazy,
with the news about the diplomatic event
When Edward arrived at the boutique, he found it already closed. So, he headed home. At the entrance, the security informed him of a telegram from Melanie’s hometown Walking into the living room, he found everyone getting ready for dinner.
