Chapter 34 

Melanie had no intention of engaging further with Gabrielle. Instead, she reached out and pushed her aside. 

Gabrielle, ever alert, saw Edward emerging from the attice building and let out a dramatic gasp before feigning a fall to the ground. 

“Ms. Smith, let’s talk this over. What do you think you’re doing?” she said, Immediately putting on a pitiful expression. 

Edward was chatting with a colleague nearby when he noticed the commotion and quickly made his way over. 

“What’s going on?” he asked Melanie, concem etched on his face. 

Melanie wasn’t buying into Gabrielle’s act. It felt like she was trying to pull a fast one on her. 

“Ms. Graham, the ground’s pretty hot. Aren’t you worried about burning your backside? Maybe you should get up. It doesn’t pay to overheat yourself just to try to smear my name,” she retorted, a mocking tone in her voice.

Gabrielle’s face flickered between shades of annoyance and embarrassment. The pay seemed to droop in the heat. 

“Edward, 1 have no idea what I did to upset Ms. Smith. She pushed me to the ground,” Gabrielle said, turning to Edward with a wounded look 

Edward had seen the push himself, but he was puzzled about why Melanie would act that way. 

Melanie remained unfazed, her captivating gaze locked on Edward. If he were to reprimand her for this, she would seriously question his intelligence. Someone in his position shouldn’t let luck be the only factor in his success 

Edward glanced at Gabrielle, his voice low but firm. “Get up. This isn’t a good look for you”

Just as she thought Edward would scold Melanie, he turned to her with an unusual patience. “Now, tell me what happened.” 

Melanie seized the opportunity to recount the events, relaying Gabrielle’s comments verbatim 

“I didn’t push her. I just asked her to move out of the way. Who knew she’d just flop down like that? To be honest, it caught me off guard. 

With a sharp glint in her eye, she continued, “But what I’m really curious about is–did I embarrass you in front of anyone?” 

Edward’s expression darkened. Although he usually kept his emotions in check, he felt a surge of anger at the situation. 

Gabrielle’s words were unnecessarily hurtful, and anyone would find them offensive. 

“Gabrielle, apologize to my wife,” he commanded, his voice steady but fim, 

Gabrielle was taken aback, not expecting Melanie to complain not Edward to take her side so easily. “Edward, I did it for you! I didn’t want you to be embarrassed at work,” she protested, her face a picture of innocence. 

Edward’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Mind your own business. I don’t need your concern. 

With that, Gabrielle could no longer hold back her tears. “Edward, have you been enchanted by this woman? You believe everything she says, don’t you?”
