Chapter 30
Cody glared at Jennifer, his frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
“Why didn’t you respond to Christine’s letter back then? Even if you didn’t want to help, you could have at least acknowledged it.
“If you had, maybe Anna might have shown some consideration with Melanie there today. After all, she’s her niece–in–law. Now look what you’ve done. Because of you acting so high and mighty, it’s likely that this business deal has gone down the drain.”
The Hawke family had been hoping to partner with Anna to open an ice skating rink. In a time when entertainment options were limited, young people flocked to such places.
A larger venue could yield substantial profits, but setting up a sizable skating rink required significant investment. The financial burden wouldn’t be as heavy if they could pull in partners.
Jennifer shifted uncomfortably, knowing Cody had dismissed the letter from Christine when it had first arrived.
He had scoffed at the idea, thinking it was just a plea from their impoverished relatives who wished to benefit from their goodwill. They had simply tossed the letter aside without a second thought.
Janet had echoed her father’s sentiment, mocking Christine for even bothering to send the letter.
“Does she really think her daughter deserves to marry someone from the city? She’s just a country bumpkin–uneducated and unsophisticated. No matter how capable our family is, we can’t find her a golden opportunity.”
After reading the letter, Jennifer had discarded it without a care. Who would have imagined that Melanie would rise up and become the daughter–in–law of the Grayson family?
Now, filled with regret, Jennifer hastily sent a telegram. In it, she stated her intentions, requesting Christine to contact Melanie and ask her to speak favorably about their family to Anna, urging her to consider a business partnership with them.
Meanwhile, Melanie was unaware of the Hawke family’s shamelessness as she admired the car parked outside.
Although it was just a second–hand Ford sedan, she felt a sense of pride. In an era where most people struggled to own bicycles, having her own car made her feel like she had risen above the rest.
Sapphire and the rest were astounded to find a car parked outside of their house.
“Edward, whose car is that?” they asked, their curiosity piqued.
Even Sophia couldn’t help but glance over, intrigued. Though her family was well–off, a small car wasn’t something one could just buy without thought
“It’s Aunt Anna’s. She’s letting Melanie use it. Melanie will get her driver’s license soon,” Edward explained.
Sophia’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What? Why would Aunt Anna give her the car? Who does she think she is?”
Edward furrowed his brows, staring coldly at Sophia for a few seconds.
It then dawned on Sophia that Edward had mentioned before that she should have more respect for Melanie as her sister–in–law.
Though she felt displeased, she added, “Why did Aunt Anna give the car to Melanie? Does she Imow how to drive?”
to have a way to get around. Melanie may not drive now,
“Aunt Anna is worried about Melanie having to go out and work while she’s pregnant, so she wanted her to but she’ll start taking lessons to get her driving license.
Hearing this, Felicia felt a pang of jealousy. After being with the Grayson family for so long, she still hadn’t been able to drive a car. rasily?
Why did Melanie
get one so
She thought about her old, battered bicycle and clenched her fists.
However, she didn’t dare question it directly. After all, she wasn’t family by blood.
Sophia’s expression darkened. Why was Anna so blased? she had even given a car to a country bumpkin instead of her.
“I don’t think Melanie will be able to learn. Driving is pretty difficult. How about I take the test for a license and drive the car instead?” sophia suggested. Edward’s frown deepened. “You’re still a student. What do you need a car for?”
Sophia shot back, indignant, “Why shouldn’t I? There are students at school who drive. We’re not poor. It’s not unreasonable to have a car
“Besides, getting a license isn’t easy, and Melanie has no way to even apply to take the test for a driving license without being able to attend the tees.”
can pay for her. Can you afford to pay for yourself?”
