Chapter 15
ch, this was way too awkward. Melanie instantly regretted not tuming off the light. Now she and Edward were just lying there, awlowardly staring at each other.
“Maybe…we should tum off the light,” she finally mumbled.
He agreed and got up to switch it off.
As the room plunged into darkness, the atmosphere grew even stranger, thick with an odd tension. The fresh bedsheets and the wedding decorations felt like silent suggestions, budging them toward something.
Edward hadn’t been thinking along those lines at all. But after he had heard Melanie’s conversation with Felicia earlier, he couldn’t be sure what she was expecting tonight.
They were legally mamed now, after all. He believed it was his duty to be a good husband and treat his wife well
Some of his friends had also married through arranged meetings, and once they had gotten married, they had naturally started to share their beds with their wives. Soon after, they had all had lads. It all seemed to just happen without much c
complication
Melanie was already pregnant, so they probably shouldn’t be intimate. But given her earlier comments, did she expect something to happen tonight? If he did nothing, would she feel disappointed?
This was way harder than any negotiation he had ever faced. He was a highly capable counselor in his work life, but he was completely out of his depth when it
came to this
Melanie thought that if she just closed her eyes and fell asleep, everything would be fine–she could avoid the awkwardness entirely. She tumed on b hoping to drift off.
on her side,
She should have been exhausted from the day’s events, and falling asleep should have been easy. But with him lying next to her, his presence was impossible to ignore, and sleep just wouldn’t come. To make things worse, her mind drifted back to that strange dream she had had before.
In the dark, he suddenly broke the silence. Was what you said earlier true?”
His question didn’tr
t register in her mind right away since she was lost in thought. When it did, her face turned bright red. How could he ask that so bluntly? She had just been talking nonsense to mess with Felicia! But now that he had asked so directly, she couldn’t admit to that. Instead, she stammered out a
“Well, F–I’m not really sure… It’s just something the doctor mentioned. But it wasn’t a real doctor–more of a rural practitioner, I wouldn’t take it too seriously.” She quickly made up an excuse.
a reply.
He nodded, but he was still uncertain. He turned slightly to look at her. Even though the lights were off and the curtains were drawn, there was still enough light left from the evening sky for him to make out her outline.
It just didn’t feel right to him for their wedding night to end like this. As her husband, he felt obligated to do something. Leaving her alone like this seemed thoughtless.
With her already in a delicate position, he didn’t want to add to any confusion or doubts she might have about his feelings.
With that in mind, he scooted closer to her, silently making up his mind. He reached out and gently wrapped his arm around her from behind.
Melanie’s heart skipped a beat. Panic surged through her.
what was he thinking? was he seriously taking her words to heart? Did he really intend to do something tonight?
There was no way. What If something happened to the babies? And besides, they didn’t even have a real emotional connection yet. Wouldn’t this just be… taking advantage?
While her mind raced with a flurry of thoughts, Edward felt just as unsure.
What now? Even if they couldn’t take things all the way, maybe they could still share some form of intimacy like other married couples.
