Miles frowned. His usually gentle gaze turned dark and furious as he glared at Hailey.
Caught firmly in his arms, Gillian regained her footing before turning to thank him. "Thank you. I'm fine."
Hailey didn't even notice the lethal glare Miles was giving her. She kept her eyes locked on Gillian, demanding, "Why did you hit my boyfriend?!"
"You should ask your boyfriend what he said to me." Gillian let out a dry laugh. "That was the first time I've ever slapped someone in my life."
"What could he have possibly done to you?" Hailey furrowed her delicate brows. Looking at the bright red handprint on York's face, her heart ached terribly. "No matter what, hitting someone is wrong! I never thought Director Jordan would be this kind of person! You need to apologize to my boyfriend right now!"
"Apologize? He's your boyfriend, not your toddler. Does he really need you fighting his battles because he got slapped?" Gillian's lips curled into a mocking sneer. "What would you know anyway? Your brain is as smooth as a marble counter. A koala wouldn't even want it."
Hailey wasn't too stupid to miss the insult. Her small face flushed scarlet with humiliation. Being young, she was completely flustered and had no idea how to snap back.
Seeing her so distressed made York's heart break.
"Gillian, whatever issues we have, leave her out of it," the man said, pulling the young woman behind him protectively, his face thunderous. "If you have a problem, take it out on me."
Gillian: "..."
She really wanted to slap him again. What a complete asshole.
Gritting her teeth, she took a step closer, stopping right in front of York. Dropping her voice so only he could hear, she said, "Come home tonight. We need to talk."
With that, she coldly withdrew her gaze and turned back to Miles. "Miles, please keep an eye on my mom for me. I have some things to take care of, so I'm going to head back."
"Of course, I'll handle things here. I've already assigned staff to watch over her, so don't worry." Miles was the picture of perfect consideration. "I'll give you a ride. I have to drop off some paperwork at the Medical Regulatory Board anyway, so it's on the way."
"Alright," Gillian agreed readily, offering him a warm smile.
York's brow furrowed deeply, his eyes radiating a bone-chilling hostility as he watched Miles.
Gillian knew exactly why he was furious. A man who refused to get a divorce obviously couldn't stand seeing another man hanging around his wife.
