"Ah—!" The knife sank into Hailey's shoulder, ripping a horrific scream from her throat. Blood instantly soaked through her clothes.
"Hailey!"
Realizing what had just happened, York immediately lunged to subdue the crazed attacker. The woman thrashed wildly, her blade slicing a deep gash across York's arm.
Gillian's heart leaped into her throat.
Ignoring the bleeding, York pinned the frantic woman to the ground. She continued to glare at Hailey, screaming hysterically, "You bitch! I'll kill you! Give me back my baby!"
Security rushed in moments later and dragged the woman away.
York pulled Hailey into his arms. Her eyes were completely bloodshot, tears streaming down her face. "York, I'm your girlfriend! Why didn't you save me?!"
She was in total disbelief. In a moment of extreme danger, York had instinctively protected Gillian.
"I'm pregnant! Did you just decide you don't want me or the baby anymore?"
The young woman sobbed violently, clutching her bleeding shoulder.
Gillian pressed her lips together, finally snapping out of the shock of the attack. Watching the girl cry so hysterically, Gillian had absolutely no idea what to say.
More than anything, she didn't understand why York had saved her. Logically, grabbing Hailey would have been easier, and beyond that, Hailey was the woman he actually loved.
"Hailey." York's voice was infinitely gentle and patient as he held her tightly. "Everything happened so fast, and you two were standing right next to each other. I grabbed the wrong person—"
The sheer tenderness and profound guilt in his tone were things Gillian had never once received from him.
"How could I ever not save you?" York looked at the crying girl with pure heartache. "Let's get a doctor to look at that wound right now, okay?"
Gillian's heart constricted painfully. Of course. Why would he ever choose to save her? It was just dumb luck. She just happened to be pulled out of the way in the chaos.
A fleeting second of warmth, and it was only because he thought she was someone else.
York never gave a damn whether she lived or died.
His gentle coddling only made Hailey cry harder. "I thought you didn't want us anymore..."
She hiccuped between sobs, weakly hitting York's chest.
York simply sat there, letting her hit and curse him without a word of protest.
