Most of the office staff had left for their lunch break, leaving Gillian alone to annotate Hailey's paper. York's cold, accusatory tone struck her like a physical blow.
Gillian's heart sank. She stopped typing.
Looking up at him, she noted his light gray overcoat, which only accentuated his innate, unyielding authority.
Gillian happened to be wearing a gray coat as well, making them look ironically like a matching couple.
"She came crying to you?" Gillian asked, her throat tight. "Perfect timing. I was just reviewing her paper. Would Mr. Foster like to take a look?"
York frowned. "I'm talking about something serious."
"Did you know she gets basic academic concepts completely wrong?"
Gillian stood her ground. "If she's here, she needs to actually work. Her performance is a disaster, yet she expects to be treated like royalty. If you really care about her, why make her suffer in a hospital?"
"I'll hand this paper back to her shortly. Is she going to run to you crying again? Are you going to come storming in to interrogate me about 'bullying' her again?"
"If she can't even handle basic tasks, take her home. Pamper her, feed her well, and let her focus on having the baby."
"Everyone starts somewhere," York replied coldly. "Were you born a medical genius? I put her under your supervision so you could guide her properly. Now you're holding her lack of experience against her. Are you purposely sabotaging her because you can't stand seeing her succeed?"
"York..." Hailey walked in from the hallway, gently tugging at York's sleeve, her voice soft and timid. "It's my fault for being too slow. It has nothing to do with Gillian. Please don't speak to her like that."
She turned to Gillian. "Gillian, I was in the wrong today. I'll be much more careful from now on and focus on learning."
Gillian pressed her lips together tightly. A heavy weight settled on her chest, and a sudden wave of dizziness hit her.
It was already 1:00 PM. She hadn't eaten lunch, and she had skipped breakfast. The familiar, gnawing pain in her stomach began to flare up, draining the color from her face.
"You're just too kind for your own good," York said, affectionately tapping Hailey's nose. He then glanced at Gillian's pale complexion. "Since Hailey forgives you, I have nothing more to say. Let's go eat."
