Miles was sharp enough to notice the truth so easily...
Gillian offered a cold, bitter smile. It was obvious her soon-to-be ex-husband truly didn't care about her at all.
The man looked at Gillian, his gaze burning with deep, intense emotion. "You don't need to thank me. I help you because I want to. Don't feel guilty. I treat you well because I want you to be happy, not because I expect anything in return."
Gillian didn't know how to respond; she only felt a profound sense of being moved.
Once, she had treated York with that exact same devotion, only to receive endless, freezing apathy in return.
"Miles, between us..." Gillian wanted to make things clear, unwilling to give him false hope.
Even if she divorced York, she had zero intention of jumping into another relationship anytime soon. She didn't want to blindly accept his kindness without boundaries.
That would be far too cruel to him.
"I know," Miles gently interrupted, offering a warm smile. "If there was any chance for us, we wouldn't have waited this many years. That's why I said you don't need to feel guilty. I know you don't have those feelings for me. Just treat me as a close friend you can confide in, alright?"
"That's not fair to you."
"So, are you going to push me away just because I have feelings for you? Liking someone isn't a crime, and I won't cross the line. I just hope you won't shut me out. I made my peace with it years ago. Having feelings for someone doesn't mean we have to be together."
Gillian paused, looking at him in a slight daze.

After finishing her IV drip, Gillian went to see her mother. She comforted her for a long time, but her mother's mental state remained highly unstable. She kept muttering about finding her husband and hunting down the people spreading rumors, her mind completely completely detached from reality.
