Chapter 303

Third Person’s POV

“Sorry we took so long to bring you the truth,” Sean said to Caldwell.

“Your father’s service and sacrifices will never be forgotten.”

He held Caldwell’s gaze for a moment longer than necessary, his eyes heavy with unspeakable guilt. Then he turned and left.

Caldwell stood rooted to the spot, his mind a total blank.

He didn’t know what he was supposed to say or how he was supposed to react. The beast that had howled with hatred inside him for more than two decades now felt hollowed out, its spine snapped, its fury lost in a bewildered silence.

He stood there in a daze for what felt like an eternity before finally raising his eyes to Seraphina.

His eyes were bloodshot, his wolf pupils shimmering erratically.

He tried to smile-his lips twitched, his jaw worked-but his facial muscles refused to obey. They simply

wouldn’t move.

“I…”

The words died in his throat.

Seraphina had once hated him, but now, even she didn’t know what to say to him.

After a long, heavy silence, she finally managed, “Your father was a great man. You should be proud of him.”

Caldwell let out a laugh—a broken, ragged sound—and with it came tears, streaming hot down his face.

“So, this is it?” He looked at Seraphina, his eyes swimming in tears.

“I’ve wasted all these years drowning in hatred… for nothing?”

Seraphina opened her mouth, but nothing came.

“And everything I did… I dragged the honor he died for through the mud, didn’t I?” Caldwell went on.

He laughed through his tears, his face twisted with despair, misery, and bitter self-mockery. Every trace of the commanding alpha he used to be had completely vanished.

“Sera… am I just a joke now?” His voice trembled. “A complete, pathetic joke?”

Seraphina still didn’t know what to say. After a long silence, she finally spoke, her voice quiet but firm. “Cal…-turn yourself in.”

The intimate address briefly kindled Caldwell’s lifeless eyes, but her next three words snuffed out that fleeting hope, plunging them back into darkness.

“If you turn yourself in…” Seraphina continued. “At least the innocent lives lost will have some justice. And your father-maybe he can rest in peace.”

Seraphina couldn’t offer him any comforting words. She didn’t know how.

His father’s heroism could not erase the blood Caldwell had spilled in the name of his own vengeance.

“No.” Caldwell shook his head. “I won’t turn myself in.”

He stepped closer and took her slender arm. His grip was impossibly gentle, devoid of any trace of werewolf strength- as if he were terrified of hurting her.

His gaze lingered on her face, heavy with sorrow and a trace of longing.

“I know you’ve already told Edwin and my uncle everything. Probably the police, too. You just don’t have the evidence to back it up, right?” he said quietly, brushing a strand of hair from her eyes.

He smiled. “It’s a waste of time, Sera. They can’t catch me. Without a conviction, I am an innocent/man. And my father’s honor remains intact.”

The madness hidden in his eyes made Seraphina’s heart tighten.

“Sera, I won’t call you Toasty anymore. I’m sorry I always forced that on you.”

He withdrew his hand and gave a sad smile. “Goodbye.”

Then he turned and walked away.

Seraphina stood where she was, watching him go.

His back, slowly swallowed by the shadows, carried a strange finality-as though she were watching someone step into the pages of a closed book.

The next time Seraphina heard about Caldwell, it was on the news: Canyon Technology Group, headquartered in North America, had imploded from within.

Every illegal operation under its umbrella had been exposed.

The executives responsible for those criminal enterprises were all arrested by Interpol.

Only the company’s mysterious owner remained at large.

Seraphina knew it was Caldwell.

She hadn’t seen him since the day they parted on bad terms.

Meanwhile, Edwin-who had once run the Craig Group-was back in charge.

Caldwell had vanished without a trace.

“Where is he?” Seraphina murmured to herself, frowning.

She had never believed Caldwell was irredeemably evil-a conviction that only deepened when she discovered his father had been an undercover agent, killed by Tobias instead of the Blade pack.
