Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 301

Chapter 301

Third Person’s POV

The question that suddenly surfaced in her mind caught her off guard.

Her eyelids trembled slightly as she quickly pulled her gaze away from Mortimer, forcing herself to suppress the faint stir in her heart.

“Velda, I’ll head back.”

Velda didn’t get the answer she was hoping for from Seraphina.

She wanted to ask more, but she didn’t want to put Seraphina on the spot. So she pursed her lips and let it go.

She thought that although Mortimer hoped Luna Seraphina would give him a chance, he would never want to use the fact that he had saved her life to pressure her into staying by his side.

Thinking of that, Velda felt a little guilty for what she had just said.

“Luna Seraphina, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pressured you like that.”

Her eyes turned red. “Please don’t take my words to heart. If Mortimer finds out, he’ll scold me again.”

Seraphina gave her a reassuring smile and patted her shoulder. “It’s fine. Whatever happens, we’ll talk about it after he wakes up.”

Velda’s eyes lit up. She wasn’t sure if she had misunderstood Seraphina’s meaning or if Seraphina truly intended to give Mortimer a chance.

“Luna Seraphina…”

“I’ll head back.”

In the days that followed, Seraphina continued working as usual.

After taking some time to recover, she returned to the Shadowfang Healing Center, and everything seemed to return to normal.

During that time, Mortimer still showed no signs of waking up.

According to the doctors, the stone that struck his prefrontal lobe had caused severe brain damage.

A large hematoma had formed inside his skull, and his body couldn’t absorb it on its own. However, performing a craniotomy carried a high risk. For a werewolf already in a coma, the surgery could leave him permanently unconscious.

By then, most of Mortimer’s physical functions had gradually recovered thanks to a werewolf’s powerful healing abilities. But the blood clot pressing against his brain tissue prevented him from waking up.

Even if he did regain consciousness, there was a high chance he would suffer permanent complications.

He could develop severe cognitive impairment, behavioral changes, or other postoperative complications.

The location of the injury was extremely dangerous. One wrong move could cost him his life.

Even the top neurosurgeons in the world were unwilling to perform the surgery without absolute certainty.

When Seraphina knew that, she showed little reaction. It was as if she were listening to a story about a stranger.

Only the dormant mate bond inside her chest still ached faintly.

That day, after seeing her last patient, Seraphina stepped out of the consultation room.

The moment she looked up, she saw Caldwell standing in the hallway. She hadn’t seen him in a long time. He stared at her with a heavy expression. The aura of his wolf was subdued, and a faint sadness lingered in his eyes.

When he realized she had noticed him, he instinctively straightened his posture. His movements carried a rare sense of unease.

He forced a faint smile. “Se… Sera.”

“What do you want, Caldwell?” Seraphina’s voice was cold and distant.

Hearing her address him so formally, Caldwell’s eyes dimmed.

He had always believed that, at the very least, he held a special place in her heart as her senior. He never expected that one day she would look at him with the same wariness she would show an enemy.

He looked at her bitterly and let out a self-deprecating laugh. “So I’ve become a stranger to you too.”

His eyes were filled with sorrow as he looked at her. “I can’t get your forgiveness anymore, can I?”

Seraphina met his gaze without hesitation. “No one can forgive what you’ve done.

“Caldwell, I can’t be friends with someone who is cruel and has blood on his hands.”

She lowered her eyes slightly. “You should be grateful that I don’t have evidence. If I did, I would be the first person to turn you in.”

After saying that, she seemed to think of something and let out a quiet laugh. “Maybe by then, the blood on your hands would have my name on it too.”

Caldwell looked up in shock. His reddened wolf eyes stared at her, and his lips trembled. “Is that really how you see me?”

He reached out with a trembling hand, wanting to grab hers. But the moment his fingers touched her, he hesitated and pulled back.

He looked at her with a bitter smile. “You know I would never hurt you.”

“Is that so?”

Seraphina laughed softly. “Your idea of not hurting me was tricking me away under the guise of a kidnapping, then making me watch helplessly as the people who fought beside me died because of your plans?

“You used me to lure Mortimer there, leaving me to live every day with the guilt of what happened to him. You call that not hurting me?”
