The doctor arrived shortly after, examined her thoroughly, and said, “She’s going to be fine now that she comes to. A werewolf’s natural resilience has already pulled her through the worst of it. She just needs to stay at the Healing Center for a few more days, and once she passes a full physical, she can be discharged.”
Hearing that, Seraphina’s parents let out a collective sigh of relief.
“Mom, Dad, I’m okay now. You guys should go home and get some rest. You look exhausted,”
“We’re fine. Just stay in bed and get some sleep. Your mom will stay here with you, and I’ll go home and fix you something to eat.”
Garfield gently stroked Seraphina’s hair, a look of deep affection in his eyes. “Dash misses you, too. I’ll bring him along when I come back to see you.”
“Okay, Dad.” Seraphina nodded.
After Garfield left, Seraphina turned to Thomasina. “Mom, why don’t you lie down here and get some sleep with me?”
“Alright, alright.”
It was a VIP hospital suite, resembling a small three-bedroom apartment.
There was an extra bed set up right next to Seraphina’s, and she urged Thomasina to lie down and rest.
Though still weak from just coming around, Seraphina didn’t feel very tired.
“Sera, if you don’t feel like sleeping yet, I can stay up and talk with you for a bit,” Thomasina suggested.
Seraphina nodded. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “Are Trista and the others doing okay?”
“Don’t you worry. Trista is fine,” Thomasina replied, deliberately glossing over the plural “others.”
“She was lucky at the time-she was standing in a more open area, and Wilmot shielded her. She only got a few minor scrapes.”
Seraphina gave a small nod. “What about… my senior?”
“You mean Caldwell?”
Seraphina nodded again.
Thomasina sighed. “Caldwell’s got it rough, too. His mother got mixed up in a very serious crime; she’s been arrested and is currently awaiting trial. He’s fine physically, but he hurt himself trying to dig you out. Before the rescue teams arrived, he was clawing at the rubble barehanded at the site where you went down. He didn’t even care when his wolf claws tore and peeled back -all ten of his fingernails were ripped off, and they still haven’t healed.”
A hint of sympathy colored Thomasina’s tone as she spoke of it.
She looked at Seraphina, starting to say something, but stopped herself and swallowed the question back down.
Hearing that, Seraphina fell silent.
Caldwell’s mother was involved in a serious crime? What kind of crime could it possibly be?
She frowned, a cold feeling creeping over her as she thought of things she didn’t want to face, her face turning slightly pale.
Noticing her change in complexion and assuming she was just wiped out from having just come to, Thomasina quickly said, ” Let’s drop it. You need to rest, and I’m going to get some shut-eye, too.”
“Okay”

Thomasina was genuinely exhausted. It was clear from her thin and haggard face that she hadn’t had proper rest in a long time.
Seraphina didn’t make a sound, and within moments, Thomasina drifted off to sleep.
Yet as she lay there in bed, Seraphina couldn’t find any sleep at all.
Her mind drifted back to what Mortimer had asked Caldwell that day-asking him if that bombing had really just been Moses’s
solo decision.
Why would Mortimer ask something like that?
Did the crimes Abigail committed have anything to do with Mortimer’s question to Caldwell?
Why was it such a coincidence that she happened to be called outside by Caldwell that day?
If they were supposedly kidnapped, why were they able to escape so easily?
Was it really just because Moses underestimated them and only left two useless guards to watch them?
Her head was spinning.
She didn’t dare-and didn’t want-to connect Caldwell to that bombing.
She didn’t have many close friends, and she truly considered Caldwell to be a very, very good friend of hers.
If someone she cared about was tied up in an incident that massive-one that had killed so many people-she had no idea how she would ever face him.
Over the next few days, word of her coming around brought a steady stream of visitors.
