Third Person’s POV

She kept murmuring to him in broken sentences for a long time. Mortimer seemed to be relying on the faint mental feedback from their repairing bond to hang onto his last shred of consciousness, answering her every now and then.

Seraphina didn’t know how long they held on, but every breath was getting harder to take.

The air was gone.

The physical weight of the suffocation washed over her, and she started to slip away.

“Mortimer… this time, even if you want that chance… I don’t think I can give it to you.”

Oxygen starvation clouded her brain. Still, the bond between them burned clearer and warmer, anchoring their failing minds together in the darkness to preserve their last waking thoughts.

“Sera… Sera…”

Mortimer’s desperate, pained voice echoed in her ears, though she couldn’t hear him clearly anymore; he sounded like he was

far away.

A harsh light pierced the darkness from above, followed by the loud crash and scrape of heavy boulders being shoved aside.

She forced her eyes open, desperate to see where she was.

Just before she lost consciousness, a massive dog’s head filled her fading vision. It had coarse fur, panting with its tongue lolling

out.

“Da… Dash?”

The second the name left her lips, everything went black.

Deep within her unconscious mind, Seraphina felt like she was walking forever.

She drifted through darkness, disoriented, with no idea where she was going.

She kept putting one foot in front of the other on instinct.

Familiar voices called her name from the void.

She strained to place them–she heard her dad, her mom, her grandparents, Edwin, and so many of her packmates.

But she couldn’t see a single one of them.

She kept walking blindly forward.

A figure materialized in front of her. It was seventeen-year-old Mortimer, looking like he did back in high school before his werewolf awakening.

He was wearing a crisp white dress shirt and dark slacks, looking neat and aloof, yet unmistakably young.

Standing at a podium, he locked eyes with her and smiled.

“Hello, Seraphina,” he said. “It’s nice to meet you.”

He held his hand out to her. Looking into his eyes, she could see the clear reflection of her own shocked face.

“Seraphina?”

Mortimer smiled as he called her name again.

She focused on him, slowly reaching out to take his hand.

But a second later, his hand dissolved into glowing fragments, vanishing in front of her.

When he reappeared, his face was covered in blood. His eyes stared blankly, unfocused. The black wolf within him crouched weakly, yet the healed mating bond mark on their chests glowed bright.

He looked at her, his expression heavy with sadness and despair, backing away step by step as if he couldn’t stop himself.

“Goodbye, Sera.”

“Mortimer!”

Seraphina lunged for his hand, but her fingers closed around empty air.

“Mortimer, where are you going?” she tried to cry out, her voice breaking.

But no matter how hard she pushed, she couldn’t make a sound. She could only watch, helpless, as he turned and walked away.

The massive, imposing shadow of the black wolf behind him faded fast.

“Mortimer!”

Her werewolf instincts screamed at her. If he left now, she might never see him again.

She scraped together every ounce of her physical strength to shout his name.

A sharp, burning pain flared in her throat as she screamed.

“Sera? Sera?”

Familiar voices echoed close by. They sounded anxious, worried, and thick with pity.

The light bled from her vision, and her world plunged back into black.

When she slowly forced her eyes open, she was met with a blinding white light.

“Sera!”

“Oh, Sera, you’re awake. I was worried about you,” Thomasina choked out, her voice catching.

Seraphina turned her head slowly, taking in her mother’s exhausted face and red, swollen eyes.

Her dad, Garfield, stood next to her.
