Chapter 296

Third Person’s POV

Seraphina backed into Mortimer pressing her spine flush against his chest to brace his weight and share her body heat.

She was desperate to warm his freezing, blood-drained body as his werewolf vitality slipped away.

“Loosen your grip. Slowly,” she said.

Mortimer knew what she was trying to do. Gritting his teeth, he resisted. “No.”

“I know what I’m doing. Lean back,” she urged. “I’ll support you. Let me give you a chance to rest.”

When he didn’t move, she added, “Mortimer, if you leave me alone in here, I never want to see you again.”

“Sera…”

Her tone softened. The thin air made it hard to breathe, and the lack of oxygen fed her panic.

“Mortimer, I’m terrified of sitting here alone, waiting to die. I need you to talk to me. Distract me.”

She squeezed his arm. “Help me. Stay with me, okay?”

A long moment passed before Mortimer let out a low, ragged groan.

“Okay,” he managed.

He hesitated, reluctant to loosen his grip. When he eased his weight against her back, he realized his arms had gone dead; he

couldn’t move them.

Feeling his breath grow shallow against her neck, sensing his once-powerful heartbeat stuttering to a crawl, Seraphina let the

tears fall.

She couldn’t hold it together anymore.

“Mortimer?”

“Yeah.”

His voice was a whisper.

“Do you know when I first saw you?”

The silence behind her stretched out, heavy with a mounting sense of dread.

He spoke. “High school?”

Seraphina bit down on the back of her hand, fighting off the panic and forcing herself to stay awake.

“Yeah. Freshman orientation. You gave the welcome speech.”

Mortimer stayed quiet, lost in the memory.

“That’s a shame,” he murmured. “Would’ve been nice to know you back then.”

Seraphina smiled but let the comment slide. “I fell in love with you the second I saw you.”

She had never believed in love at first sight, and she never expected it to lead to so much hardship and heartache.

Another long silence stretched between them.

The quiet made her feel hopeless.

“Martimer…

“Mortimer,” she choked out, her voice raw and desperate.

“I’m… I’m here. Don’t be scared I’m here.”

Seraphina reached back and grabbed his bloodstained, dirt-caked hand.

“Remember asking if I’d give you another chance once we canceled the agreement?”

Her voice trembled. “If we make it out of here alive, you’ve got it.

“I refuse to be your widow, Mortimer. You stay alive, and we’ll start over.”

Mortimer said nothing. It took a long time before he mustered the last of his strength to speak. “That’s a shame,” he rasped. ” Looks like I might’ve missed my chance again.”

A single tear fell onto Seraphina’s face, the heat of it stinging her skin.

“Sera, I’ve always missed my chance with you. Missed it in high school, missed it in college. Through three years of marriage, I missed it again. And now… I’m gonna miss it one last time.”

Warm tears splashed onto Seraphina’s face as he struggled to force the words out.

The normally aggressive black wolf inside Mortimer gave a quiet, distressed whimper.
