Chapter 293
Third Person’s POV
“Tear him apart! This hypocrite-use your claws and slit his throat!”
Inside Caldwell’s mind, his dormant gray wolf roared, fighting to seize control of his body.
“Shut up. It’s not time yet.”
Caldwell forced the beast down with authority, willing the extending fangs back into his jaw.
“Did you think,” Caldwell said, “that I would lure you here and give you a chance to stop me?”
Before Mortimer could process the threat, a wave of dizziness slammed into him.
His wolf instincts spiked. Every nerve in his body screamed with the terror of a predator sensing a natural disaster.
The earth beneath them began to heave.
“Earthquake!”
Mortimer shouted, alarm ripping through his voice.
Abandoning everything, he coiled his muscles, launched himself off the shaking ground, and sprinted for Seraphina’s tent.
Years of foreign and civil war had left Ukraine with neither the time nor the resources for an earthquake warning
system.
Between the constant conflicts, a massive tremor was the last thing on anyone’s mind.
“Sera!”
“Toasty!”
Caldwell’s inner wolf took over. Animal instinct hijacked his brain, dropping him to all fours as he sprinted forward.
A massive boulder slammed down to their right. More rocks followed, piling up and choking off the path.
The quake hit without warning, catching everyone blind.
Shouts and screams ripped through the air.
Terrifying fissures tore open the ground before the earth heaved upward.
Around them, abandoned, war-torn buildings swayed as the terrain convulsed.
Seraphina’s heart slammed against her ribs.
Through the deafening roar of the quake, she could hear Mortimer and Caldwell screaming her name.
She threw a frantic glance over her shoulder and saw them both sprinting for her.
Through the falling debris, Mortimer roared, “Get under the table! Now!”
But the injured man was still lying on the makeshift operating table.
She had no idea who he was, but her gut told her he mattered.

Ignoring Mortimer’s order, she grabbed the man with everything she had, hauled him off the surface, and shoved him underneath first.
The violent tremors made it impossible to stay on her feet.
She scrambled to steady herself, looking for a safe place to take cover, but she was out of time.
“Sera!” Mortimer bellowed from behind her.
With a vicious, animalistic snarl, a heavy, dark blur reeking of blood tackled her.
Before she could twist around, a solid, warm weight pinned her to the floor.
Mortimer’s bones and muscles shifted and swelled as he partially transformed into his wolf form, bracing his newly hardened body against the collapsing ceiling.
He let out a low, strained groan. A split second later, the space plunged into pitch black.
“Sera, you hurt?”
Mortimer whispered against her ear. His voice shook with the effort of straining against the heavy rocks, using his own body as a shield to keep a tiny pocket of space open.
Seraphina realized it was him pinning her down.
They were trapped together under the rubble.
Being buried triggered an instant flashback to when she had been trapped under the snow.
It felt the same-pitch black, with zero visibility.
The only difference was that last time, she’d been waiting to die alone.
This time, Mortimer was with her.
Her long-buried trauma clawed its way to the surface.
She started shaking, her panic spiking in the lack of light.
Desperate to ground herself, she reached out blindly for anything to hold on to.
