Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 294

Chapter 294

Third Person’s POV

Not knowing what else to say, she whispered, “Thank you.”

Mortimer heard the sincerity in her voice.

“You don’t need to thank me,” he replied. His voice was faint, trembling slightly. “I’m just… trying to make up for past mistakes.

She knew what he meant-the avalanche. The time he’d left her behind on the mountain.

In truth, she hadn’t minded that he’d left; no one could have seen an avalanche coming.

What had stung was his indifference when he found out she was buried, and his suspicion that she’d faked the incident to force him to come back.

But once she learned it was Vivian who had penned that dismissive reply, her lingering resentment had faded.

At the end of the day, their relationship was a signed contract.

Emotionally, Mortimer owed her nothing, which meant he had no amends to make.

Even if he’d been beside her on that mountain, he wouldn’t have been obligated to risk his life for hers.

Considering their relationship now, he had no reason to do so.

“Mortimer, you don’t owe me anything,” she said, her voice slow and quiet.

She felt him give a slight nod in the dark. “Alright. I’m just doing a good deed.”

His voice shook hard on the words. He managed to finish the sentence, but Seraphina noticed his breathing growing shallower. The heavy, imposing presence of his inner wolf was fading fast.

A sudden surge of fear gripped her.

She squeezed his arm. “Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Just as he said it, a drop of warm liquid hit her face. It was too thick and sticky to be sweat.

“The air is just… thin down here,” he forced out. “Makes talking… difficult.”

A few more drops splattered against her skin.

She touched her cheek. The warmth on her fingertips and the sharp, metallic tang of blood confirmed her worst fears.

“Don’t lie to me. You’re hurt.”

Seraphina forced her tone to stay calm, slipping into the mode of treating a patient.

“Mortimer, stop pushing yourself.”

She wanted him to relax his hold, but some unseen force maybe a werewolf’s instinct to protect its mate-kept him anchored in place. His arms stayed rigidly braced against the ground, refusing to yield.

And the harder he strained those muscles, the faster he was going to bleed.

She couldn’t see his injuries in the dark, but judging by where the blood was coming from, he had to have taken a massive blow to the head or back.

Har panic spiked as she remembered the heavy thud of a boulder hitting him when he’d first rushed over to cover her

“Mortimer, did you hit your head?” she asked, Yighting to keep her rising anxiety in check.

Mortimer didn’t answer. He hadHost consciousness, yet his arms remained locked straight.

When pushed to their limits, a werewolf’s body could lock its bones and muscles into place to keep from collapsing.

“Mortimer?”

Her voice was shaking now.

In the pitch black, the seconds ticked by in silence.

Seraphina had no idea how much time had passed before she heard Mortimer speak. “I’m frere. What’s wrong? Are you scared?”

“You hurt your head, didn’t you?”

Another long stretch of silence followed.

Just as Seraphina thought he had passed out, he murmured a quiet, “Yeah.”

Then he added, “Don’t be afraid. It’s just a minor injury. A rock probably clipped my forehead.”

He spoke clearly this time, trying to sound as if he wasn’t badly hurt.
