Chapter 644-2
Jason continued speaking.
“Whatever we had left after the missing shipments was significantly reduced after the explosion.”
I folded my hands together.
“And Conrad?”
Jason exhaled slowly.
“Conrad has made his position clear. He wants compensation. He wants what North Ridge
paid for.” Jason paused.
I nodded slowly.
“Have you tried negotiating with him?” I asked.
He nodded. “I have.”
His answer came immediately.
“I sent a response after his last letter. I proposed that we discuss the situation directly rather than allow it to escalate,” Jason added.
“And he refused,” I said.
“Yes.”
Jason leaned forward slightly.
“I offered to have representatives meet with his people and work out a reasonable arrangement. He rejected the proposal.”
I remained quiet.
Jason looked down at the papers on his desk.
“I’ve continued trying to keep the situation from becoming a war.”
There was something tired beneath his words.
“I’ve been communicating with him, but Conrad isn’t particularly interested in patience anymore.”

I absorbed that.

I understood why Jason had seemed so tense during the council meeting. This wasn’t simply a disagreement between two Alphas.
North Ridge had paid for goods it never received, and Conrad had apparently reached the point where he believed retaliation was justified.
Yet despite everything I had heard, Jason still seemed determined to handle the situation himself.
I looked at him.
“You should have told me.”
His eyes lifted.
“I didn’t think you needed to know, Luna Faye,” he said.
There was something in his tone I couldn’t place. But I didn’t miss the fact that he just addressed me by my title for the first time since I arrived.
“Why did you think I didn’t need to know?”
Jason’s expression remained controlled.
“Because you’re just visiting. You’re not here to involve yourself in Silver Hollow’s internal affairs.”
I stared at him.
“I am not asking to take over anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why do you keep treating my involvement like it’s some kind of threat?”
Jason leaned back.
“Because I know you, Faye.”
His voice was calm.
“And I know once you decide something matters to you, you don’t know how to stand aside.”
I almost smiled at that, but there was nothing amusing about the situation.
“Maybe because standing aside isn’t always the right thing to do,” I said.

Jason didn’t respond.
I leaned forward.

“Look, I’m not asking you to hand over the affairs of this pack to me. I’m asking you to let me help.”
He remained silent.
“If I understand the situation properly, I might be able to help in whatever way I can.”
Jason’s expression changed immediately.
“No.”
The answer was so firm that I blinked.
“No?”
“I don’t need your help to run the affairs of my pack,” Jason said.
I stared at him. For several seconds, I said nothing. It wasn’t the refusal itself that bothered
It was the way he said it. As though I had suggested something absurd. As though I were some inexperienced child who had wandered into a serious conversation and decided she wanted to play a part.
My patience finally began to wear thin.
“I didn’t say you couldn’t run your pack.”
Jason’s eyes remained fixed on me.
“I’m saying Silver Hollow doesn’t have to go through this alone.”
“I appreciate the sentiment,” Jason said coldly.
