The morning air felt cool against my skin as I ran along one of the familiar routes. I had missed these paths more than I had realized, and being back on them again brought a strange sense of familiarity that I hadn’t expected to feel so strongly.
My earphones were in, and music played softly as I ran, allowing me to lose myself in the rhythm of my footsteps. I wasn’t paying much attention to anything around me until my instincts suddenly stirred.
Someone was behind me.
I slowed slightly and glanced over my shoulder.
Caleb was coming toward me from a different path.
He was dressed for a run as well, wearing a fitted shirt and running shorts, and his hair was damp with sweat. His shirt was slightly darkened around the collar and back, making it obvious that he had already been running for some time before our paths crossed.
I turned forward again without stopping and continued running, although I deliberately reduced my pace. I didn’t need to look back to know that he was closing the distance between us.
A few moments later, he caught up with me and fell into step beside me. He gave me a nod, and I returned it before pulling one of my earphones out.
“Good morning,” I greeted him.
“Good morning.”
I glanced at him briefly before looking ahead again,
“You know, you move pretty fast. It’s almost as if you have somewhere you need to be,” Caleb said.
“Maybe I do,” I said.
Caleb gave me an amused look.

I laughed softly and continued running for a few inore steps before slowing to a stop.
Caleb stopped beside me.
He bent slightly, placing his hands on his thighs as though he had just completed the most exhausting run of his life. His breathing was exaggerated enough to make me stare at him for a moment before I burst out laughing.
“Seriously, Caleb?”
He straightened slowly, still pretending to struggle for breath.
I laughed even harder. “There is absolutely no way you’re that exhausted.”
“I haven’t been running as regularly as I used to,” he said, although the amusement in his expression made

it obvious that he was simply playing along.
“You’re being dramatic.”
He shrugged.
I shook my head, smiling as I put my earphones away, knowing it was useless now. We started walking along the path together, our pace much slower now.
For a while, neither of us said anything. The morning was quiet around us, and I found myself enjoying the simple familiarity of walking beside him.
Caleb eventually broke the silence.
“So, how are you enjoying your stay so far?”
I glanced at him. “I’m enjoying every second of it.”
He nodded, but something about the way he looked ahead made me think he wasn’t entirely convinced by my answer.
Another brief silence followed.
Caleb seerned to be thinking about something, and when he finally spoke again, his voice was quieter.
“It’s unfortunate that you came visiting during a time like this.”
I nodded slowly, letting his words settle for a moment before casually bringing up something that had been on my mind.
“Caleb, what about all the attempts at renegotiation with Conrad so far?” I asked. “You’re Jason’s Beta, so I assume you’ve been involved in most of it.”
Caleb glanced at me as we continued walking.
“I have.”
He was quiet for a moment before explaining that Jason had written to Conrad several times in an attempt to resolve the situation. Most of the letters had gone unanswered, and the only response they had received was Conrad making it clear that he was no longer interested in negotiating.
I listened carefully, remembering what Jason had said during the council meeting about Conrad refusing to discuss the matter any further.
Caleb continued, sounding almost as surprised by the development as I was. “The funny thing is, Conrad called yesterday evening. He said he’d had a change of heart and was willing to discuss an agreement after all. He also said he would be sending two of his men to meet with Alpha Jason today.”
I slowed slightly as I processed that.
“Really?”
Caleb nodded.
The change seemed almost too sudden. As recently as yesterday morning, Jason had spoken about
