Chapter 652-2

She didn’t respond immediately.

I could see the anger in her face, but beneath it was something else.

Fear.

My mother was afraid. That realization hurt more than I expected.

She looked at me again, and this time, there was no accusation in her eyes. There was only a terrible certainty.

I watched my mother carefully as she studied me. After a moment, she finally spoke. “I can

see it.”

I looked at her blankly because I already knew what she was going to say.

“The magic.” She stepped closer, her eyes remaining fixed on me. “It’s draining you. The darkness is all over you, Helen. It has already spread too far.”

I looked away. Somehow, hearing it from someone who understood these things made it different. I had known I was dying. I had known the end was approaching. But hearing my mother say it made the reality heavier.

Seraphine reached for my arm. “You’re coming with me.”

I looked at her. “Where?”

“Silverthorn.”

“No.”

She frowned. “Helen.”

“I’m not going.”

“You don’t have time to argue with me.”

“And I don’t have time to travel somewhere I don’t want to be,” I said.

“You have hours left.”

“I said no,” I said.

She stared at me. “If there is something I can do…”

“I know you can probably do something,” I said.

Her expression changed.

I stood slowly. “If I’m dying, I’d rather die here.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Here?”

“In Blood Crescent.” I took a breath. “I want to be buried here.”

Seraphine went completely still.

“My children are here,” I continued, my voice softening. “If I have to leave this world, I want them to be able to visit my grave. I want them to know where I am.”

Seraphine stared at me before stepping closer. “If you really care about your children, is this what you want for them?”

I didn’t answer.

“Do you want to watch them bury you now?” she asked. “Or would you rather live long enough

to make more memories with them?”

I looked away.

She continued, “You talk about your children as though accepting your death is some kindness you are giving them.”

I swallowed. “It isn’t.”

She reached for my hand. “They don’t need a mother who has decided that she is already

dead.”

I couldn’t answer.

A cough suddenly rose in my chest. I turned away and covered my mouth with my handkerchief. The cough came harder this time, and my chest burned as I waited for it to finally pass.

When it did, I lowered my hand. The handkerchief was stained again, so I folded it quickly.

When I looked up, Seraphine was watching me. I could see the pain in her eyes, and I couldn’t

bear it.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

She said nothing.

“I’m sorry you wasted your time coming all the way here.”

Her expression hardened. “I haven’t wasted my time.”

“I’ve accepted what is happening to me.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“I have,” I said.

I sat back down. “I know what this is.” My voice was quieter now. “I’ve lived in that world for too long not to understand how it works.”

Seraphine remained standing.

“I knew this wasn’t going to be smooth,” I continued. “I knew there would be a price.”

She didn’t deny it.

“And I know that if I use something like that to save myself, someone would eventually have to pay for it.” I looked down at my hands. “I put my hands into it once.”

I smiled faintly. “Just once.”

My voice broke slightly, but I continued. “And now I’m paying for it.”

Seraphine stared at me.

“It ends with me,” I said.

She shook her head. “No.”

I frowned. “You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly,” she said.

“I don’t doubt that you could save me.”

That made her pause.

“But I also know the cost would be high,” I added.

Her silence confirmed it.
