I went back outside and found my mother exactly where I had left her, still tending to the vegetables.

For a moment, I simply stood there with my phone still in my hand.

The call with Alexander had left me with more questions than answers, but at least I had something to work with now. His suspicion that Conrad might be connected to what was happening here had unsettled me. I hadn’t considered it before, and the more I thought about it, the more difficult it became to dismiss.

I slipped my phone into my pocket and walked back toward my mother.

She glanced over her shoulder.

“Was that Alexander?” she asked.

“Yes.”

I moved back into the garden and crouched beside her, picking up the vegetables she had already gathered and placing them into the basket beside us.

My mother watched me for a moment before returning her attention to the plants.

“Is there a problem?”

I shook my head.

“No. We were only talking

I continued working for a few moments before adding, “About what is happening here.”

My mother gave a small nod

She didn’t press me for details, and I appreciated that.

I kept working, but my thoughts had already moved somewhere else. There was something I had been thinking about since leaving the council hall.

I straightened slightly and looked at my mother.

“Why don’t you talk to Sage?”

My mother glanced at me.

“Talk to Sage about what?”

“About Jason… About all this.”

I wiped my hands against the side of my dress before continuing.

You could ask Sage to convince Jason to accept help.”

My mother became quiet.

I didn’t wait for her to answer immediately.

“Silver Hollow is going through too much right now. Jason is trying to handle everything himself, which is obviously not working, but his pride is getting in the way.”

My mother slowly placed another vegetable into the basket.

“You should talk to Sage yourself then,” my mother said.

“I’ve considered it,” I said. I actually had, but I knew better than to assume that would work.

I sighed.

“The problem is that Sage can misunderstand things.”

My mother looked at me. She didn’t say anything, but I knew she understood what I meant.

“I know how she is. If I approach her and tell her that Jason should accept help from Blood Crescent, she could easily interpret it differently. She might think I’m trying to interfere with her position or that I’m trying to make Jason look incapable,” I said.

I paused.

“And I don’t want that conversation to become something it isn’t,” I added.

My mother listened quietly.

“But if you tell her, she might actually listen,” I continued. “You’re her mother. She’ll take what you say

seriously.”

My mother didn’t immediately respond.

That hesitation caught my attention, and, to be honest, I was a little offended.

I stopped what I was doing and looked at her properly.

“What?”

She shook her head slightly.

“Nothing.”

I stared at her. Something about her response bothered me.

I picked up another vegetable, but I didn’t put it into the basket.

“You don’t seem interested in doing it,” I said.

My mother’s expression remained calm.

“I didn’t say that.”

Chapter 654

“You didn’t have to, Mom.”

I lowered the vegetable.

All my life, I had been hearing about responsibility, duty, and what was expected of me. I had accepted those expectations because I understood that certain situations came with responsibilities that went beyond what I personally wanted.

But now that Silver Hollow was facing a genuine crisis, I couldn’t ignore the imbalance.

“You’ve always been very quick to remind me about my duties,” I said quietly.

My mother looked at me.

“You’ve always told me that I have responsibilities and that I have to think beyond myself.”

I paused, trying to calm myself.

“So I don’t understand why that same standard doesn’t seem to apply to Sage.”

My mother’s expression changed slightly. She seemed surprised by my outburst.

I continued before she could answer.

“She’s the Luna of this pack. She has a position. She has responsibilities too. Yet she’s allowing Jason to shut everyone out while the pack is suffering.”

I stood slowly.

“There was a council meeting this morning.”

My mother remained silent.
