A Warrior's Second Chance (Faye and Alexander) novel Chapter 699

Chapter 658-2

Chapter 658-2

Did you really come all the way here to ask me something you could have asked me over the phone?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She waited.

“I needed to see you.”

Her expression softened slightly, but she didn’t interrupt.

“I’ve been talking to some people,” I continued. “Trying to find someone who knows enough to

help.”

I paused, choosing my words carefully.

“Most of them didn’t know enough. They could tell me things about magic, but not the kind of magic I’m asking about. And the few people who aren’t afraid to admit that they know dark magic…” I sighed. “They’re afraid to get involved in your case.”

Helen’s expression didn’t change.

“They don’t want anything to do with it,” I said.

She nodded slowly.

“Some of them stopped answering my calls altogether,” I added. “Others made it clear they didn’t want to discuss it anymore. Eventually, they all just cut contact with me.”

Helen didn’t look surprised. She looked almost as though she had expected me to tell her exactly

that.

I stared at her.

“You knew.”

“I suspected,” she said.

I leaned back against the couch.

Helen folded her hands in her lap.

“I knew it wasn’t going to work.”

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

She gave me a small, almost apologetic smile.

“Because you wanted to try, Alex.”

I remained silent.

“You had already made up your mind,” she continued. “You wanted to see if you could find

someone. You wanted to believe there was another option available.”

She paused.

“So I let you try,” Helen added.

I looked away.

There wasn’t much I could say to that.

She was right.

Claire

I had been determined to find someone who could help, even though a part of me had already

suspected how difficult it would be. I simply hadn’t wanted to accept that some things couldn’t be

solved by looking hard enough or asking the right people.

For a while, I said nothing. The room became quiet again. Then another thought entered my mind.

One I had been avoiding since I found out about Helen’s condition.

I looked at my mother.

“Does Irene know?”

Helen’s expression changed.

It was subtle. So subtle that someone who didn’t know her might have missed it.

But I knew her. She looked away.

That was enough. I stared at her for a few seconds, waiting for her to say something.

She didn’t. I slowly shook my head.

“Mom.”

She kept her gaze elsewhere.

“You can’t hide it from her.”

“I know,” she said.

“Then why haven’t you told her?”

Helen sighed.

I watched her carefully.

She looked tired. Not physically tired alone, but tired in a way that seemed to come from carrying

something for too long.

I lowered my voice.

“Were you planning for Irene to find out when you…”

The words stopped in my throat.

I couldn’t finish them. I didn’t need to. Helen understood exactly what I had meant.
