I held Jason’s gaze for several seconds after the words left my mouth.

Jason didn’t answer immediately. His expression remained controlled, but I could see the slight tension settle across his features.

I wasn’t trying to provoke him. At least, that wasn’t why I had come to his office. I had walked in wanting information, not an argument. But his insistence on treating my concern as if it were somehow connected to our history had finally started to frustrate me.

I leaned forward slightly.

“Jason, this isn’t about you versus me.”

His eyes remained on mine.

“And it isn’t about you versus Alexander either,” I continued. “I am not here because I’m trying to prove that Blood Crescent is better than Silver Hollow, and I’m certainly not here to tell you how to run your pack.”

Jason remained quiet.

“This is about Silver Hollow surviving.”

That finally made him look away for a moment.

I continued before he could redirect the conversation.

“You have missing shipments, a destroyed storage house, depleted resources, and a pack that is now preparing for the possibility of war. North Ridge is demanding compensation for goods they paid for and never received, and Conrad has already made it clear that he is willing to retaliate.”

I paused.

“Those aren’t small problems, Alpha Jason.”

“I know they’re not. You think I don’t know?” Jason said.

“Then you should also know that asking for help doesn’t make you weak.”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“I’m not saying it does.”

“Well, you are acting like it does.”

He looked back at me.

“Since we’re being plain now, I might as well just say it like it is,” Jason said. “I don’t need another Alpha interfering in my affairs. How difficult is that for you to understand?” he added.

I shook my head.

“That’s not what this is about. You’re taking it the wrong way,” I said.

I sat back in the chair.

“I’m talking about an affiliate pack. A pack with resources, trained warriors, connections, and enough stability to actually provide assistance if Silver Hollow needs it. That is the whole point of having alliances.”

Jason didn’t respond.

“Blood Crescent is capable of helping,” I said. “You know that. I know that. There is nothing shameful about accepting help when your pack needs it.”

His expression remained blank now.

I could tell he wasn’t going to agree simply because I had made a reasonable argument. That wasn’t Jason’s nature, and perhaps that was exactly what had brought Silver Hollow to this

point.

But I wasn’t going to insult him by pretending I didn’t understand how much he cared about the pack.

“You care about Silver Hollow,” I said more quietly.

His eyes shifted toward me.

“I know you do,” I added.

I had known Jason long enough to recognize that beneath his stubbornness was someone who took his responsibilities seriously. He might make decisions I disagreed with, but I had never believed that he didn’t care about the people depending on him.

“You care about this pack as much as I do,” I continued. “Maybe even more than I ever could, because you’re the one responsible for it.”

Jason remained silent.

“But caring about something doesn’t mean you have to carry everything by yourself.”

He looked down at the papers on his desk.
