Chapter 645-2
His eyes remained fixed on me.
I took a slow breath.
“Maybe it’s time to put the ego aside,” I said.
The room became very quiet. I knew the words were blunt, but I wasn’t taking them back.
“Act like the Alpha you need to be right now,” I said. “The Alpha who puts his pack first, even when doing that means accepting something he doesn’t particularly like.”
Jason’s expression hardened. I could tell he wanted to argue with me.
But he didn’t. I stood from the chair.
“I’ll let you think about it.”
Jason watched me. I reached for the back of the chair and straightened it before stepping away from the desk.
“I’ve said what I needed to say,” I said.
I turned toward the door. Before I could reach it, Jason’s voice stopped me.
“If I think about it and still decide that I don’t want your involvement, will you respect that?”
I stopped.
For a moment, I remained with my back to him.
Then I turned around. His expression was serious. I knew exactly what he was asking.
Not whether I would be offended. Not whether I would argue.
He wanted to know whether I would actually stay out of it if, after considering everything, he
still told me to stand down.
I gave him a small, knowing look.
“You know me, Alpha Jason. You already know the answer to that.”
His brows drew together slightly.
I didn’t elaborate because there was no point.

Like I said… Jason knew me well enough.

I opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The moment I walked out, I nearly collided
with Sage.
She stopped abruptly.
“Faye?”
I stepped aside to give her room. Sage looked from me to the office door behind me.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I came to talk to Alpha Jason.”
Her expression changed slightly.
“Oh!”
I glanced toward the closed office door.
“Something that was discussed during the meeting earlier.”
Sage studied my face. She probably noticed immediately that I wasn’t in the mood for a
casual conversation.
I looked at her.
There was another matter I needed to address with her. One that had nothing to do with
Jason.
Sage had known about the crisis. Yet she had said nothing to me.
I understood why. Jason had told her not to.
But understanding it didn’t mean I was pleased about it. I could already feel the irritation
returning.
“Sage, you should have told me,” I said. I didn’t have to tell her what I was talking about. She already figured it out.
“Faye…” Sage started.
I held up a hand.
“Never mind.”
She looked at me carefully. I could tell she understood what I meant.
