By the time I finally decided to leave my room, I had already spent far too long going over everything I had learned in my head.

And somehow, in the middle of all of that, Jason was trying to deal with Conrad.

He had turned me down earlier, but I still needed to hear his side of it.

Not from my father.

Not from Elder Vincent.

And certainly not through whatever incomplete information had been circulating among the council.

I wanted to hear directly from Jason because he was the one dealing directly with Conrad.

I left my room and made my way toward his office. There were guards moving through the building. I noticed them without thinking much about it anymore.

When I reached Jason’s office, I knocked. A few seconds later, his voice came from inside.

“Come in.”

I opened the door.

Jason was seated behind his desk. He looked up when he saw me, and for a brief moment,

something in his expression changed.

It wasn’t surprise.

It was more like resignation. Perhaps he already knew why I was there. I closed the door

behind me and walked farther into the room.

“Jason, we need to talk.”

Jason leaned back slightly in his chair.

“I assumed we would eventually.”

I ignored the remark and took the empty chair opposite his desk.

“I spoke with my father and Elder Vincent after the meeting.”

His expression remained neutral.

“I figured you might.”

“Then you know I know what’s happening,” I said.

“I know,” he said.

I studied him for a moment.

“Good. Then I don’t need to pretend I came here to discuss something else.”

Jason placed the document in his hand on the desk.

“I see you’re back to calling me Jason. Tired of being formal?”

It took me a moment to fully understand what he was trying to say.

I smiled. “I apologise. Alpha Jason,” I said.

Jason suddenly became serious. “What do you want, Faye?”

I took a slow breath.

“I want to understand exactly how everything happened.”
