Chapter 643-2
And despite all of that, they were preparing for war.
I stared at my hands.
How exactly was Jason planning to pull that off? I wasn’t questioning his ability as an Alpha.
Jason had always been capable of making difficult decisions even before he became the alpha, and he was not the kind of person who would willingly allow another Alpha to
intimidate him.
But war required more than determination.
It required resources. It required weapons.
It required food. It required warriors who were properly equipped and prepared.
It required transportation, communication, medical supplies, defensive structures, and enough reserves to sustain the pack if the conflict lasted longer than expected. Jason knew all that.
Silver Hollow was short on all of those things. So how could Jason possibly believe the pack was ready?
I remembered the training ground from the previous night. The image of all those wolves training at once came back to me.
Even civilians who had never seemed particularly interested in military training before were involved.
At the time, I had been impressed by the seriousness of it. Now I understood it differently. I now knew that Jason wasn’t simply strengthening the pack’s military because he wanted to.
He was trying to compensate for a shortage of warriors. And perhaps that was why the elders had been concerned about the children and some of the older wolves being pushed too hard.
If the pack didn’t have enough qualified warriors, Jason was probably trying to increase the number of people capable of defending Silver Hollow.
But that still didn’t solve the problem of weapons. Training someone to fight was one thing.
Equipping them for an actual war was another. Without those important things, all they had were claws and fangs.
I leaned back against the headboard. My thoughts became increasingly uncomfortable.
If North Ridge really attacked, Silver Hollow couldn’t simply rely on numbers.
What would happen if they ran out of weapons? What would happen if their food supplies became even more limited?
What would happen if the conflict dragged on for weeks?
I closed my eyes. There was another possibility I couldn’t ignore. Maybe Jason didn’t actually believe war was inevitable.
Maybe the training was preparation for the possibility of war while he continued trying to negotiate with Conrad, as my father had said.
My father had said Jason was still trying to reason with him. Perhaps that was the main plan. Prepare as though war was coming, but keep negotiating until there was no other option.
That would make sense. It was probably the only sensible strategy available to him. But it still left me wondering what Conrad actually wanted.
I knew very little about the details of what had happened between North Ridge and Silver
Hollow.
All I knew was that shipments had disappeared, the goods had never been recovered, and Conrad had apparently given Jason time to resolve the matter before threatening retaliation.
That suggested Conrad had been patient.
At least initially. If he had simply wanted an excuse to attack Silver Hollow, he could have
acted much earlier.
Instead, he had waited. That meant the missing shipments mattered to him.
Or perhaps they mattered because North Ridge had paid for them and Silver Hollow had failed to fulfill its obligation.
Either way, Conrad had apparently decided that enough was enough.
I opened my eyes. The storage house still bothered me. I couldn’t stop thinking about the timing.
The shipments disappeared. Silver Hollow struggled to recover from the losses. Then the main storage facility exploded.
Now the pack was facing a possible war while already struggling with debt and shortages. It was too much to look at as a series of unrelated events.
