Chapter 643-1
FAYE
Later that evening, I lay across the bed in my room with one arm tucked beneath my head, staring at the ceiling while my thoughts continued circling around the same questions.
I had been trying to relax for almost an hour, but my mind refused to settle.
Every time I closed my eyes, I found myself going over the information my father and Elder Vincent had given me.
The possibility of war.
I turned onto my side and stared at the curtains drawn across the window.
How did shipments simply disappear? That was the part I couldn’t stop thinking about.
A shipment wasn’t something that could vanish without leaving some kind of trail. There were people responsible for preparing it, people who loaded it, guards who accompanied it, drivers or handlers who moved it, and people at the receiving end who were expecting it.
There were records, there were routes, there were schedules. There were usually several people involved in getting a shipment from one place to another.
So how had no one been able to account for what happened?
I rolled onto my back again.
Maybe it was an insider.
The thought had occurred to me earlier, but I hadn’t wanted to immediately assume the
worst.
Still, it was difficult to ignore.
Someone inside Silver Hollow had to know enough about the shipments to interfere with them effectively if an insider was involved. They would have to know when the goods were being moved, what was being transported, which routes were being used, and possibly even which guards had been assigned to protect them.
That would require access to information.
And trust.
I frowned.
Alternatively, it could have been someone outside the pack.
An enemy could have been watching the routes and waiting for an opportunity to intercept the shipments.
That possibility was just as troubling.
If an outsider was responsible, then Silver Hollow had another problem entirely. It would mean someone had been able to interfere with their operations repeatedly without being caught.
