As for Taylor, they hadn’t seen each other since that chance meeting at the restaurant. Over the past two years, Taylor had managed to stay out of the limelight, avoiding scandals and making fewer public appearances, becoming much more low-key than before.
Leonora, unapologetically herself, often brushed off her friend Shania’s comments. “Don’t you know how old you are? Shouldn’t you start taking life more seriously? Look at Joselyn—she got married last year and might even become a mom soon.”
Joselyn had indeed gotten married the previous year but felt she was still young and wanted to wait before having kids. She promised to wait for Leonora to find someone and get married so they could experience motherhood together. However, a year had passed, and Leonora was still single.
That morning, faced with her mother’s nagging, Leonora decided not to argue. “I’ve got a busy day ahead, so let’s not get into this. I’m off to the university,” she said, grabbing her bag from the coat rack and heading out.
Leonora no longer lived in the old neighborhood. Before Joselyn's wedding last year, her family had moved to a new house and celebrated with a big housewarming party, inviting friends and relatives.
She headed to the underground garage and drove her modestly priced white car to the university. The luxury cars Taylor had left her felt too extravagant and didn't fit with her professional image. So, after running into Taylor at the restaurant, she had the dealership sell them off as second-hand cars.
Since then, she had switched to a more average car, living comfortably within her means. Out in the world, no one would guess she was actually a multimillionaire!
At the university, Leonora parked her car and went straight to her meeting. It was the beginning of the month, so the office was bustling with back-to-back meetings. By the afternoon, after wrapping up another meeting, she caught a ride with a colleague to another department for work.
The office at the university kept her busier than her days at the Ferguson Group, dealing with a wider variety of tasks and people. These experiences had significantly contributed to her growth over the past two years.
After the meeting at the educational department, Leonora stepped outside to find the sky overcast and heavy rain pouring down. The weather had been unpredictable lately; fine in the morning but stormy by the afternoon.
Due to the weather, it was getting dark earlier than usual. It wasn’t late yet, but the sky was already pitch black. Standing at the building's entrance, her colleague had left half an hour ago.
Without an umbrella or a car, Leonora tried to hail a cab with her phone, only to find herself waiting in line for over ten minutes, still waiting. It was usually hard to get a taxi at this time, and the afternoon rain made it even worse.
So, Leonora waited at the door. Earlier, she had called her dad, Devon, asking if he could pick her up after work, but he was also working late. Looking up at the sky, which remained gloomy, the rain showed no sign of stopping.
By around seven o'clock, with traffic jammed and no cabs taking orders, Leonora started to feel disheartened. Had she known, she would have driven herself, at least then she’d have shelter from the rain.
After another long wait, as the traffic slowly started to move and the rain lightened a bit, Leonora eyed the bus stop across the street, thinking it might be better to brave the rain and catch the bus. At least she would have a seat and, albeit slowly, make her way home. Otherwise, just standing and waiting at the department’s entrance felt foolish.
Grabbing her bag to shield her head, she had just stepped out to dash through the rain when suddenly an umbrella appeared above her. Startled, Leonora thought, who could be so kind as to bring her an umbrella at this time?
Lowering the bag from her head, she turned to see who was holding the umbrella for her, and her expression froze. And so did she, completely stunned.
Taylor. How could he be here?
