It seemed like without even checking, everyone assumed she was pregnant.
With a furrowed brow and a serious look, Leonora asked Joselyn, "Joselyn, what if I really am pregnant? Should I keep the baby or not?"
Leonora liked kids, but she'd never thought about having one out of wedlock, let alone Taylor's.
Like they say, you can't walk by the river without getting your feet wet.
She’d asked Taylor countless times to use protection, but he always refused. Now, he could just walk away without a care, leaving her scared out of her mind.
Seeing Leonora's panic, Joselyn took her hand. "Let's just get it checked first, then we'll figure it out."
Leonora looked to Joselyn for advice, but Joselyn was just as unsure.
Having the baby would definitely affect her future dating and marriage prospects, and an abortion could harm her health.
But not having it? That child would be Taylor's. If she had the baby, they wouldn't want for anything, not in this lifetime or the next. The baby would be born into luxury, right in Rome.
Gripping Joselyn's hand tightly, Leonora was overwhelmed with worry, especially about how to explain this to her parents.
"168, Leonora." The nurse called her name for the ultrasound before the system did, prompting her to head to the exam room.
Hearing her name, Leonora sprang up from the bench and made her way to the examination room.
Joselyn followed, whispering comforts, "Arielle, don't stress too much, everything will be alright."
---
An hour later, Leonora entered the specialist’s office with her test results. The doctor looked them over and said, "You're not pregnant; you have gastritis and your blood sugar is low."
"Have you been under a lot of stress lately? Your overall physical condition isn't great."
Hearing she wasn't pregnant but only had gastritis, Leonora's heart, tense all morning, finally relaxed.
When asked if something had happened, Leonora was momentarily at a loss for words.
Apart from breaking up with Taylor, she hadn't faced any other issues.
Seeing Leonora's awkward silence, Joselyn chimed in, "A breakup, she's going through a breakup."
The doctor looked over another set of results and nodded, "That explains it." Then added, "I'll prescribe some medication. Try to take care of yourself. If this keeps up, depression could become a concern."
Without further comment on Leonora's breakup, the doctor prescribed several medications.
As Leonora and Joselyn left with the prescriptions, they heard the doctor mutter, "Young ladies these days are either too sentimental or too carefree."
---
On their way back, Joselyn drove while Leonora seemed a bit better than when they had arrived at the hospital.
With both hands on the steering wheel, Joselyn let out a long sigh, "That was a false alarm, thank goodness."
Before Leonora could respond, Joselyn glanced at her and continued, "Arielle, how did you end up so depressed over breaking up with Taylor? I thought you didn’t like him and wanted to end things cleanly?"
"How'd it end up costing you half your health?"
Leonora had told her about ending things with Taylor, and Joselyn had expected her to be overjoyed, to feel liberated and happy.
Instead, she ended up sick at home.
The doctor had also mentioned her stomach issues were caused by stress.
Joselyn's questions made Leonora feel awkward.
Resting her arm on the car window and her palm supporting her head, she scratched her head and said, "Maybe I just can't swallow my pride."
Joselyn comforted, "It's all in the past. You had a relationship, and Taylor did seem sincere. It wasn't all for show, Arielle. Don't overthink it."
Two years with Taylor, her first love, how could she just let go?
But regarding other matters, Joselyn dared not speak further, fearing it would worsen Leonora's mood and risk depression.
