One afternoon, Leonora woke up from a nap feeling dizzy and nearly toppled over as she tried to get out of bed. Thankfully, she managed to steady herself by grabbing onto the wardrobe next to her. After a moment of leaning against it, she was hit by a wave of nausea.
With her right hand pressing against her stomach, Leonora knew she couldn’t keep going like this. She needed to see a doctor, fearing she might be seriously ill. Her parents were both at work, so she picked up her phone and called Joselyn. “Hey Joselyn, are you free right now? I’m not feeling well. Can you come with me to the hospital?”
Feeling too weak to go by herself, she had no choice but to ask Joselyn for help.
On the other end, Joselyn replied, “I was just about to ask you to go shopping. Hold tight, I’ll be there in a few.”
After about fifteen minutes, Leonora got dressed and was ready when she heard Joselyn knocking on her door. Upon stepping in and seeing Leonora, who had lost weight and looked pale, Joselyn was shocked. “Arielle, what happened to you? You said you were taking time off to rest, but you look worse!”
She gently grabbed Leonora's chin, turning her face from side to side, scrutinizing her complexion. “Can you even look at yourself? Anyone would think something terrible has happened to you.”
“What exactly did you say was wrong again over the phone?” Joselyn asked, her concern deepening.
Breathlessly, Leonora replied, “I feel dizzy and nauseous, and even though I’ve been eating well, I just don’t have any strength.”
Leonora, usually so healthy, couldn’t understand why resting at home hadn’t helped. Hearing her symptoms, Joselyn suggested, “Let’s get you to the hospital.”
“Alright.”
With that, they headed downstairs together. Walking down the stairs seemed to help Leonora feel a bit better. Soon, they were in the car.
Holding the steering wheel, Joselyn suddenly turned to Leonora and said, “Arielle, I need to ask you something, but don't freak out, okay?”
Leonora looked at her. “Go ahead, I won’t freak out.”
She had already told Joselyn about her breakup with Taylor over the phone a few days ago, and Taylor hadn’t contacted her since. Seeing Leonora’s calmness, Joselyn cautiously asked, “Is there any chance you could be pregnant?”
Given the symptoms Leonora described, including her constant drowsiness, Joselyn couldn’t help but suspect pregnancy. “And Taylor did mention wanting kids, so who knows if he might have done something,” Joselyn added, planting seeds of doubt.
At Joselyn’s question, Leonora felt a pang of anxiety, hesitantly saying, “That shouldn’t be possible. I’ve been careful.”
“But anything could happen. The world is full of surprises, especially with something as easy as getting pregnant,” Joselyn reasoned. “The medication Dr. Fleming prescribed is reliable, but nothing is 100% foolproof. Accidents happen.”
The more Joselyn spoke, the more Leonora’s heart sank, and her complexion grew even paler. She had already ended things with Taylor. What would it mean if she were pregnant now? She hoped against hope that life wouldn’t play such a cruel joke on her.
