When Taylor spoke, Leonora turned to face him, her tone tinged with frustration. "Taylor, you always do this. The moment I give in a little, you push for more."
"It's gotten to the point where I'm actually afraid of you."
"Weren't things better when they were simpler?"
Taylor wasn't sure whether to laugh or feel bad. Leonora's reluctance to cling to him was something he found both amusing and endearing.
Before meeting her, he never brought women home. If he had, they would probably have been ecstatic, staying up all night thinking about how to please him.
But Leonora was different. No matter when he tried to get closer, to deepen their relationship, she resisted.
Yet, the more clear-headed she was, the more Taylor cherished her.
Gently massaging Leonora's hand, Taylor said, "You've been avoiding me for days. Is it too much to ask for a little of your time?"
She had been secretly job hunting, and Taylor hadn't made a big deal out of it.
When Taylor mentioned her avoidance, Leonora felt a twinge of guilt.
Not only was she avoiding Taylor, but she had also been secretly looking for jobs behind his back.
As Leonora prepared to respond, Taylor beat her to it. "Don't reject me," he said, pausing briefly before adding, "My feelings for you are genuine."
With that, he took her hand and kissed it gently.
Such a show of vulnerability from Taylor made Leonora struggle to resist, reminding her of how caring he had been at the hotel, spending the entire evening with a smile on his face.
With a slight frown, she said, "I'll try calling my mom and see. If she disagrees, you can't keep pressuring me."
Taylor had developed a fondness for acting coy and showing his softer side, always ready to speak up.
And somehow, Leonora found herself relenting more to him, not wanting to disappoint or oppose him.
"Alright."
After Taylor agreed, Leonora dialed her friend Joselyn’s number. “Mom, I’m staying at Joselyn’s tonight.”
Upon hearing this, her mother, Shania, immediately sounded displeased. “You can hang out with anyone but seem to avoid your father and me. Don’t you like spending time with us?”
“Mom, it’s not like that. I just want to chat with Joselyn. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
“Once a girl grows up, she’s out of her parents’ grasp, isn’t she? Just remember what your father and I look like, that’s all.”
Having been well-behaved at home for a few days, it was frustrating to be out again.
Especially since she wasn’t out pursuing romance or bringing a boyfriend home, which naturally upset Shania.
In the passenger seat, Leonora felt awkward as her mother ended the call.
Taylor was still beside her.
Putting her phone away, Leonora turned to Taylor, only to see him smiling.
Leonora’s expression darkened. “You’re laughing? This is your fault for making me take a leave from my mom.”
Taylor replied, “Your mom’s probably upset thinking you’re out all the time without bringing a boyfriend home.”
