At 11 o'clock, the meeting wrapped up, and everyone began to file out of the room. That’s when Taylor and his uncle Grant ran into each other at the conference room doorway.
Seeing the tension between them, the shareholders and executives quickly exchanged pleasantries and made their exit.
Everyone knew Taylor and Grant had a habit of clashing.
Nobody wanted to get caught in their family drama.
Once the room had emptied, leaving just Taylor and Grant standing there, Taylor took a few steps forward, casually saying, “Back from your trip yesterday and already at the office today? Didn’t even need to adjust to the time difference, Uncle. Can you handle it?”
Even though Grant was only a year older, and despite their frequent spats, Taylor still called him "Uncle." But every time he did, it sounded more like a jab.
Grant responded to Taylor’s sarcasm with a calm smile: “I’m perfectly fine, no need for your concern, Taylor.”
Grant's cool demeanor always ruffled Taylor’s feathers.
Why did he even bother coming back from abroad?
Their eyes locked, and Taylor, hands in his pockets, said, “I hope you're here purely for work, just for Keith and Amber.”
Grant's speedy return to the company, and Taylor’s suspicion grew, especially since he didn’t even mention Leonora.
Taylor had a gut feeling Grant’s return had nothing to do with Keith and Amber, nor was it just about work or competing with him.
He was back for Leonora.
After all, Grant’s departure two years ago had been sudden and against his wishes.
Facing Taylor's direct gaze, Grant pushed his glasses up with a smile: “Afraid, Taylor?”
Taylor scoffed, laughing: “Uncle, you’re too confident.”
Grant replied, “We’ll see who’s overconfident.”
Even knowing Leonora was with Taylor now, Grant felt there was more to the story.
Taylor’s deliberate closeness to Leonora as a form of revenge was obvious.
At that, Taylor let out a cold laugh and walked away.
Passing by Grant, he intentionally bumped his shoulder hard against him.
Grant glanced back but chose not to retaliate. He just patted the shoulder Taylor had bumped and then left as well.
Moments later.
Back in his office, Taylor felt restless, his thoughts bouncing between Grant and Leonora.
Grant’s eagerness to return to the company made Taylor increasingly suspicious of his motives.
Downstairs in the administrative office, Leonora felt uneasy, even cutting back on her usual restroom visits, fearing she might run into someone she shouldn’t.
If only Taylor had approved her resignation days ago, she wouldn’t be in this awkward spot now.
It was only when the workday ended without incident that Leonora finally breathed a sigh of relief.
But tomorrow would bring another day of dread at the thought of possibly encountering Grant at the office. She didn’t even want to go to work.
Maybe she should confront Grant, ask why he disappeared without a word, blame him for getting her entangled with Taylor.
But two years had passed, and Leonora felt it was unnecessary, even though she had been depressed for a while because of it.
After shutting down her computer and organizing her desk, Leonora was waiting for the elevator when her phone buzzed in her bag.
It was Taylor calling.
She answered, “Hello?”
On the other end, Taylor’s voice came through: “I’m waiting for you at the subway entrance.”
