Seeing the crowd, Jason suggested Estrella wait in the car until they got their marriage license, then he’d call her over.
In the photo studio, the staff, looking at the two sitting upright against a crimson backdrop, cheerfully said, “What a beautiful couple, more stunning than any movie stars I've photographed. Smile a bit, and lean in just a tad closer.”
As the photographer finished speaking, Estrella and Jason’s lips curved into smiles, with Jason even scooting his chair closer to Estrella’s side.
“That’s it, perfect, keep it just like that. The bride looks absolutely radiant, truly blissful.”
The camera snapped a few shots, capturing their most beautiful moments.
“Absolutely gorgeous, utterly blissful,” the photographer reviewed the shots he had just taken and then remarked, “Estrella, Jason, those names sound so familiar. It’s like you’re both celebrities. Anyway, you can go ahead to the front desk to finalize your paperwork now.”
“Thanks, man.”
“Thank you!” The pair thanked the photographer and headed to the front desk.
There, the clerk handed them each a form, asking, “Got your ID and Social Security card? Show me the originals, then fill out these forms and sign here.”
Sitting earnestly at the desk, Jason whipped out a pen from his pocket and quickly filled in his information, scribbling his name with a flourish.
Looking up at Estrella, he saw she was still earnestly reading through the marriage license application without having written a single word.
Seeing this, Jason couldn’t hide his impatience. “Babe, come on, sign it so we can get our certificate. What’s there to read? It’s all standard stuff. Just sign your name, and I’ll handle the rest.”
Estrella, pulling back the form he tried to take from her, said seriously, “I need to read the fine print before I sign anything.”
Coming from a legal background, Estrella wasn’t one to sign any document without scrutinizing it first.
Jason’s expression tightened slightly. “Babe, you’re not having second thoughts, are you? We’ve come so far to get here; you can’t back out now.”
Still focused on the form, Estrella replied without looking up, “I just want to see what it says. What’s the rush?”
“Come on, love, hurry up. There’s a line forming behind us.”
Estrella, urged on by Jason, quickly finished reading and began to fill out the form at a more brisk pace.
The clerk, observing Jason’s anxious demeanor, sized him up, wondering what was going through his mind.
When Estrella handed over the signed document, the clerk looked at her earnestly and asked, “Ma’am, are you entering into this marriage of your own free will?”
Caught off guard by the question, Estrella first blinked in surprise, then laughed, nodding, “Yes, it’s completely voluntary.”
Jason, standing beside her, was less amused.
He had warned her not to scrutinize the paperwork too closely in public to avoid suspicion.
This wasn’t a courtroom, after all.
Convinced by Estrella’s laughter and affirmation, the clerk processed their paperwork and finalized their marriage.
Handing over the red marriage certificates stamped with the official seal, she said, “Congratulations to the lovely couple. May you enjoy a lifetime of happiness together.”
“Thank you!” they responded in unison.
Stepping out into the bright sunlight, Estrella flipped open her certificate and smiled at the joyful pictures of her and Jason, noting how similar their smiles were.
